After switching the DX100 on, some media search/analysis happens. According to iBasso this is finished when a title appears in the standard player. This takes very long, about 40 minutes. I have filled the internal mem about 80% with music, the 64 GB SD-card the same. Is this normal or can I speed this up?

Could be your tags. I've already posted on how to fix this in the mp3tag faq page. It should only take up to 15 minutes or so the very first time you load all your music on the player. After that it should only take a minute to load your music on each restart.

Actually, I think this applies more to me. You have a perfect right to express your opinion and I apologize for not respecting that more. I don't think we stress the positives enough here on Headfi - which is a bug bear of mine - but I'm afraid my prejudices got away from me a bit.

Agreed, me neither actually. I hope you'll really like the DX100 - I love mine. Here's a picture that might amuse you. 30 years of Headfi history and I know which one I'd rather listen to. BTW, the GUI on the Sony is limited to looking through a little window at the cassette tape - but at least it had something!

But I found the mid bass hump a little too much for quiet listening. Unfortunately I did not try them in noisy environs before returning them. I just knew over time I would rarely listen to them. Still I would like to try the HD25-1 as a comparo. I auditioned a set of Momentums when I returned the Amperiors, end these are much more comfortable but to my listening not suitable either.

What I did try and like for travel is a set of B&W P5s. Before everyone asks why??, let me say they are not perfect but in a plane and for casual listening, I quite like them because they are comfortable for long flights, compact to pack into my travel bag, easy to put on or off or hang around my neck when the steward/ess talks to me, do a reasonable job of isolation (but not up to QC15 standards but don't require batteries and are on ear compacts and much better sounding than QC3). And finally, they are not too different sounding than my W4Rs which are my favorite IEMs with the DX100 and I note you have these. I also find them pretty good with classical music. The slightly warm signature delivers lush strings. Of course EQ can adjust most phones but I prefer neutral or near neutral phones, but in some places you just have to have a bit more warmth which seems to be why Golden Ears target frequencies for IEMs have a slightly elevated DB for bass.

I don't have HD800s and not heard them unfortunately and I couldn't risk them in public if I had them, but feel based on your budget, the Amperiors or P5s worth a listen to or if you are near an Apple store, you can purchase and return within 14 days if you don't like them. The ability to do that is worth the slight price premium in my view.

Just some rambling thoughts from a not too technical novice.

Many thanks for your thought, very much appreciated. If I didn't find IEMs inconvenient at the office I'd stick with my Westones as they sound fine. But folk there keep asking questions so I'm forever putting them in and taking them out again!
 
I certainly plan to try the options you mention, Amperior, B&W P5, DT1350, but it seems none of them get universal approval. And given how good the DX100 sounds, I wish there was something just a tad more high end that was easy to travel with.
 
The DX100 sound surprisingly good with the HD800s, but no way are they a portable option!

Give the Audio Technica ES 10's an audition. They are as portable as cans get, and they have a great high freq response.

Ahhh, memories. I had the DC2 in red. How I miss the sound of wow and flutter.....NOT.
