A question for any JH13 or JH16 owners: at what volume number do you typically listen at? I don't want to blow my ears out :) Any perceived SQ difference between low and high gain?

Depends on what source you use.
As to me(JH16+Whiplash TWag V2 ),avg 140~150 @low gain.
JH16 with original cable (much less using) avg 160~165 @low gain.

Haha.... I got a feeling that you have tested a fake 801!

The 801 though is simply a squarish design like old don't cassette player, it is a bulky and heavy brick of metal exterior that feels and looks like a big fat block of metal. No way does it look or feel plastic.

By the way, I have done the audition of the DX100 with medium gain at 150 volume on my JH16 which is similar volume as HM801 standard amp module at around 10% volume.

Maybe you have tested 2 faulty 801. I can let you try mine.

Haha are you picking to read and remember only what you choose to remember. I mentioned I had the unit the 801 in my hyands for 8 days walking over 2 hrs each day listening to it. The stock amp does have a bit more power then my Cowon D2 but I still can listen to it at full volume. Maybe you have virgin ears so the higher volume is too sensitive for your ears. Also you have very sensitive earphones. On the DX100 I keep it at Medium Gain and usually the volume will be around 210 and 230.

Jeez, does it really matter if someone prefers the DX100 to 801 or vice versa. This is totally subjective. Just enjoy what you have. Peace.

I really want to try some Orthos on my DX100. I listen to a wide variety of music - rock, indie, acoustic, electronica and jazz. Tone and timbre is of high importance to me, my home hi-fi system delivers highly on these attributes. Has anyone compared the HE-400, 500 and possibly the LCD-2 out of the iBasso?
The cans won't be used with anything other than the DX100. Are the '500 and LCD-2 really worth the extra outlay over the HE-400, or just overkill for a DAP?
Thanks.

Agree with you on this. I think DX100 is a good player and there will be people who loves it, just like the 801 being another great player too, with people who love it too. Preference of the SQ is subjective and this is so right.

Just find it interesting for a DX100 fan stating all the wrong facts of another DAP to protect a purchase make this an interesting thread to read and write.

Ok. Think I had enough of the fun. Getting out of this now.

Enjoy this wonderful player which is really cool in design and UI. With the production ended for 801, one day my best sounding 801 will fail and hopefully either DX200 or HM901 will meet the same SQ for it to replace my 801.

HE-500 straight out of the DX100 is just pure bliss. There is something very special going with that combination. I should get a chance to audition the HE-400 next weekend and I'll be sure to report my findings

Agree and thanks for the clarification.

I understand that HM-801 with Balanced Amp Module output is 440mW (the standard power amp card is not far from this figure), and if someone can listen to a JH16Pro at full volume for 2 hours at 440mW, I seriously think this is no longer music. The maximum rating for a DX100 is 245mW, which is already very powerful for a portable player.

Also agree with you that it is not power which determines the SQ, and that SQ is subjective to different ears.

Anyway, I am really enjoying the thread and was genuinely trying to find out more about experiences of users of DX100, and just that I happened to read exaggerated comments of DX100 and HM-801 that I tried to get some clarity. Playing full volume on a 801 with a JH16 in the ears at 440mW for 2 hours is no joke!

My sincere apologies for side tracking this thread of the DX100, which is for users to share genuine experience of DX100. Hope you guys enjoy this wonderful DAP and hope that more companies create better DAP everyday!

This is a thread about the DX100.

Nobody is, I hope, under any illusions that a portable amp is capable of doing with, say, orthodynamics, what a full-sized desktop amp with comprehensive power supply and amplification circuits can do, either the 801 which, for the specifications I can find for it, doesn't output more than 77mW, or the DX100, which doesn't listen any output above 245mW.

Also, how loud the volume is has to do with gain, not power. This is a common misunderstanding on these forums.

If the DX100 and HM-801 have a radically different sound, then it may well be down to preference which one anybody would like.

It's great that more companies are interested in making good-sounding portable players, but please don't turn this into some kind of battle, which it isn't.

Happy to report that the Energizer XP8000 will charge the DX100.

It took mine from 12% to 73% in 2 hours before I ran out of time and had to stop the experiment. There was still plenty of juice in the Energizer (showing 3 out of four bars of charge) so I would expect it to be able to fully charge the DX a couple of times. I'll have another go when the battery is low again.

You can purchase the HD 650's from razordog on ebay. He specializes in Sennheisers. Offer him $350 and the deal is on. In my opinion they are quite a bit better than the 598s and they pair nice with the DX100. Razordog is a factory authorized dealer. :beerchug:

Bought the HD650 earlier and also some 3rd party cables, a 5N OCC and a silver plated copper. Ordered a silver cable and also a silver gold hybrid.......will be fun. No chance to listen until later!!!

Guys, this DX100 is crazy , I was able and run both the 598 and the 500 at the same time, and with high gain all was well.....
