also would the line out from the dx90 work as a source for the dh1 [as well as the d55]?  does the dh1 have the same battery as the d55?

[i hope i'm not burdening you with all these questions.  i've got to google this stuff and find out more info, but it appears you're already familiar with all these issues, and i appreciate the benefit of your knowledge.]

it can work but it will sound not as good.

can you explain why?  i don't understand, since the same digital file would be delivered to the dac/amp, which uses its own battery for power.  why would the dx90 source not work as well as the same file delivered via usb otg from the note 4?

You don't need to use D55 and DH1 for DX90. They have DAC chips as well.
You can use the line out of DX90 for them but line out transfers sound that is already processed by DX90. It's going to be worse than direct USB connection. Through line out, you're getting the sound from a device that has worse sound quality.
I believe D55 is much better than DX90. D55 sounds as good as DX100 which costs 900 dollars.

I don't have a DH1 yet. I can't check its battery.

thanks again.  it looks like the dh1 uses a different dac chip than the d55.  the d55 uses ak4480.  the dh1 uses burr-brown pcm 1795.

also [relying on google translate on the hibino website] the dh1 uses usb bus power, the d55 has its own battery.

I haven't heard the D55 as of yet, but the DX90's DACs I would guess is on par with the D55's.  Similar to the D55's dual mono AKM DAC setup, the DX90 uses a dual mono Sabre DAC setup.

Nope, somdone has confirmed that DX90 sounds a lot inferior to DX100. I've had DX100. D55 is on par with DX100 and better in some aspects.

AKM chips sound very different from Sabre chips. I have two Sabre devices. AKM has sound stage and texture of Sabre but it has a bit of PCM color and digital sound.

people praise the geekout and say it's clearly superior to the dx90, but both are dual sabre devices.  so how much can we deduce just knowing what dac chip is used?

Nothing. Geek Out sounds very different from DX100.
Just get a Geek Out. It's the best in that price range.

i appreciate the advice. maybe i misunderstood, though, when you said "I prefer this over R10, Sony PHA2, HM901, and Geek Out 1000!" i took that to mean you thought the d55 was superior.  how do you compare them?
