I've been playing around with the settings a bit, basically DAC gain (H/L) and AMP gain (H/L) and also increasing/decreasing the amplifier knob, and the changes detected are very subtle... really very subtle, hard to tell the difference (I was listening to the music with the Moondrop Cosmo).
Is this really the case? Forgive me, but my lack of experience combined with the fact that I bought the D16 second hand has left me a bit paranoid and cold.
Are you in Phone out or Line Out mode? Assuming you're not using an external amp,you need to be in Phone out mode and the changes with the big attenuator knob will then be pronounced. In Line Out mode, the amp isn't used so the big knob doesn't do much
@Pitufo dont try line out with only d16 while wearing headphones, it will blow your ears, also the diff between low and high gain yes its not that big. Its mostly for IEM usage.
Also, my C cable is not working too. I fixed it with a 2$ after market cable from my local store

As you did not blow your ears in Line Out mode, maybe you had the DAC volume down?
Usually I set DAC volume to 100 (small knob) and approximately adjust volume with the big knob. Fine tuning is then done with the DAC volume between 90-100.
I did a very interesting test today between the Stack
1/ Dx340-D16-PB5-Coax interface.
VS
2/ Dx340-NiCD battery pack to trigger DC12V desktop mode.
There really is no comparisons. The Stack has much better ambience reverberations, instruments tonal accuracy, micro dynamic, staging, layering. But most of all is the vocal ! Singers have full of emotions with vivid Vibratos , airs. I can literally listen to each words and techniques that the artists are singing out.
As good as the Dx340 and Desktop in. It still can not outperform the mighty stack!!
Everything is now cleared up.
I switched to phone out just for one moment before going work and the sound feels clearer and more more spacious, and the amplifier knob now I do hear it working. Good!
The reason why my ears are still intact? lol I'm always cautious when I buy something new, but I think the main reason is that I was using the Moondrop Cosmo planar headphones, which is a bit demanding in terms of power.
Today I'll have some more time and try out my new audio stack: DX260 + D16 + PB15 with the Cosmo.
When combining the D16 and the PB15 what settings do you usually use on the D16? DAC H/L and AMP H/L....
I sense that I will need some thrust with the Cosmo, even if it affects battery life.

Wow, very nice comparison, thanks for the feedback. Have you tried DX340 with PB5 versus having D16 in the middle just to see if DX340 DAC sounds identical to D16 DAC?

The Nutubes in the PB5 is the difference maker…They enhance the musicality, creating a very different tonal response than classic rectifier tubes. You get the best of both worlds with the Nutubes: a rich, warm, harmonic lush sound profile (typical of rectifier tubes) while also retaining a clean, accurate, detailed sound (typical of a solid state amp).
