I wish I could find a record store like that. I'm sure one exists somewhere in Fukuoka. I just need to find it!

Oh, and the blue YMCK in my post is actually a link to their discography with some short samples, just FYI.

I'm knee deep in Japan... but the Jpop leaves me looking for more... interesting music. Most of the people I've met just tell me to listen to the likes of SMAP and Orenji Renji, or they are more into foreign music.

If you're into 8-bit music and that whole genre of poppy video game inspired stuff, definitely check out the Katamari Damacy soundtracks and this band: YMCK

Orange Range is TERRIBLE.

just downloaded some bonnie pink. Although her voice is nice, her songs are way to upbeat for me. I prefer slow songs. Gonna dl more of her and see if I hear anything I like. Recommendations for artists as well as songs would be much appreciated.

I think I come to realize that I don't just listen to a song once and instantly fall in love with it. I gave Bonnie Pink a few more hours of listening and I am liking her voice more and more with each track. My favorite right now would have to be Nocturne. The beats are a bit lighter than Utadas which was a wierd transistion since I'm into slow, moody songs. The best part is that I only have Bonnie's songs in 192kb, can't wait to get some FLAC files of her.

Slow and moody Jpop = Onitsuka Chihiro

Slow and not as moody Jpop= Kokia, Ayaka, Ayaka Hirahara, Yuko Yamaguchi, Ai Takaoka, Angela Aki

Aside from Yuko and Ai, you can probably sample the others on youtube or something.

There's probably more, but none really come to mind atm, and I'm more of a Jrock person anyway

Well im not surprised to see the usual suspects mentioned in this thread, but i highly suggest to dig out deeper than whats being listened among the anime/japanophile fanboy crowd. It differs greatly to what people actually listen in japan. Its funny that the image of japanese music is actually so distorted from an outsiders view. Its like saying everybody in the USA listens to Britney Spears all the time.

For a beginning just check out the japanese itunes store regulary, you'll find many new singles there, incl. previews. You cant buy from it but you'll surely know other sources..

Some random suggestions, most will be avaible used for great prices:

I would love to get into more Japanese music but it's difficult for people that don't understand Japanese at all. Most of my music comes from animes.

IMO, the music industry in Japan is a lot like it is over on this side of the ocean. More quantity than quality. And they seem to promote a lot of artists/idols who's songs/talents are rather..*bleh*.. So yeah, it can be quite hard to find the right music in their industry. Lots of good stuff out there that no one has ever heard of. A lot of artists I listened to faded away because of that.

Then again, maybe my taste in music is just too different from what people in Japan usually listen to. (They tend to play nice music in pachinko places though, probably to keep people relaxed so they spend more
