I could... I'll have to wait until I can afford them. Recently purchased Grado 225s-- I'm a metalhead.

And yet, I feel like I'm missing out on comfort and some of my other music; sweeping soundscapes are less immersive that I'd hoped.

The K-701 need an amp. And no cmoy will do either.

You may actually like the high end Sony's as well.
The Floats are something you NEED to try. The MB Quart QP85 sounded like my k400 only better in every way including even more soundstage, deeper bass, and more detail.

I found myself liking the AKG's quite a lot. Though since the CD1000, well...all others have gone to the way side and fell off the ship.

Floats, huh?

They just seem so...kind of...huh...

What's the word I'm looking for?

I liked the overall sound of the K701s, but couldn't stand the lack of bass. Also, background noise substantially detracted from the experience because of the open design. Finally, the headband was downrigt painful.
Does AKG make any comfortable, closed phones with the same overall sound as the K701, but with bass? If so, I would be very interested in those!

I have always been interested in hearing K1000s, but of course they are insanely difficut to find (and much too expensive if you do find them.)

I don't find the 701's lacking in bass at all. Probably the types of music we listen to. As for the comfort, it never bothered me until I used an older Beyer 990 Pro for a while and that caused a pain on my head. It's like I had to really pull them down to have the earpieces actually go around my ear, putting some pressure on the middle, top of my head, which started causing pain.

I then switched over to the 701's and for the first time noticed that little lump (or bump) on the headband, which incidently hit the exact same spot that was sore.

Other than that, it hasn't been much of a problem at all.

As for the K1K, they aren't too difficult to find. I do agree, though, that they are pretty expensive. But...they do sound amazing. Unlike any other headphone that I've ever heard. "Earspeakers" are an accurate description. You should try and get to a meet as some point in time to listen to a pair. They're quite amazing.

that way i am 'sennheiser' kind of guy.

all my headphones n earphones have mainly been Senns... tried all Ultimate ears universals, tried most AKG's, tried Beyer.

but keep coming back to Sennheiser

some non-Senns i liked: Beyer DT150, AKG K501, TF10

with no intention to ruin the thread...but i have to state ..

if u think K701 isnt lacking in bass...then what do u think lacks in bass?

i think if someone claims K701 has 'perfect bass' then they just dont like bass because K701 have a vastly recessed bass..not much weight in the lows at all.

How did anybody here get K702s? I mean, I went to a dedicated music/artist/performers' shoppe, asked around, and they had do specially order a K701 (the last available) for a client. And the K702s? Well, I doubt the man at the counter would have even known of their existence. Furthermore, I went to an audiophile store a little later (where I bought my Grados, the only store, would you believe, where I could find any) and even there, so far as I remember, he didn't know how to attain K702s (he mentioned that he could order some K701s, but it would take a while to arrive) Impossible to find; at least in my jurisdiction.

Consensus (as much as you can get for a place like head-fi, lol) for a good, cheap amp that matches the k701/k702 well is the Shanling PH100 found on ebay...

I just got the SAA Equinox cable for k702 last night, and that help improved the bass =) still not as strong as my Sennheiser HD600 (stock cable), but it's all a preference thing and I like the k702 better

Not true. With good amplification the bass of the K701 is very accurate. It just isn't meant for most of the bass boosted recordings you get nowadays. I tried the k701 on both tube and solid state amps that did well with the lower frequencies and I never missed the bass. And this is coming from someone who also owns a very bassy vintage dt990. So I know what lotsa bass is. The k701 doesn't have much bass in comparison to the dt990, but it is enough and accurate and fits its sound sig well.

To stay on topic: I've never heard a k1000 (would love to though), but I would definitely describe myself as someone who is very fond of the akg sound. My favorite is the k500, closely followed by the k501.

listen to this song 'Somebody' by eagles.

the drum's sound is so hard to make out on K701 when compared to HD600..

Absolutely correct.

When I listen to something with a lot of deep bass (Andreas Vollenweider's full-size orchestral harp, for example) on K701s, it is like fully half of the sound is missing.

Agreed. An underamped k701 is no fun at all. I've found the bass of the k701 to be accurate only with a good, juicy amp.

And I am not even really enamored with the k701. I vastly prefer the k50x. But that whole discussion about its supposed lack of bass is due to having the wrong amp (or no amp at all). At least, if you ask me
