How and why did I come up with this conclusion: Simple. I seem to always gravitate toward either the K500, 501 or now, the K1000, over any other headphones I have. It's like I have to "force" myself to listen to the other cans, and their stay connected to a headamp is always short lived.

And it's not that the others are bad sounding or anything like that. Quite the contrary, actually. But there's just something about the three aforementioned headphones' sound quality that just puts a smile on my face, with tremendous amounts of the "aaahhhhhh" factor thrown in.

AKG...hoo-rah.

You may actually like the high end Sony's as well.
The Floats are something you NEED to try. The MB Quart QP85 sounded like my k400 only better in every way including even more soundstage, deeper bass, and more detail.

I found myself liking the AKG's quite a lot. Though since the CD1000, well...all others have gone to the way side and fell off the ship.

I try to stay away from the AKG for the last 15 years...since my K141 @ 600 ohm.
Today I have the K702 and I'm super happy, and I have great results in the studio.
I just hope the next model will be 40-50 ohms.

Me too! I'm looking at Floats though.
I'll always have a pair of AKGs with me no matter what!
I expect Fitz chiming in.

Flame me if you will, but everytime I see the Senn, AKG and Grado trio, I always think of Bulbasaur (HD-650), Squirtle (K-701) and Charmander (RS-1).

...I'm going to hunt you down for this.

What really pisses me off is that I think it actually might be really accurate.

So one can only get Stax if they buy a different thing?
OH! I GET IT! Haha nice.

I'll try to get back on topic. How badly are K400/500 beaten sound quality/detail resolution wise compared to say a Lambda or SRX MKIII? I can't find much on that.

Well sure, it's electric...

But most people don't know that a Stax headphone converts everything that comes into it into the insane ramblings of a Japanese woman with a child's voice.

YMMV but I rarely listen to my K400, K401, or K500 any more. I listen to my SR-Gamma, QP85, or orthos over them. The AKGs beat the orthos for sound stage, and the SR-Gamma for bass impact by a very little bit. I listen to them so infrequently, I'm thinking of selling them.
