Love my 225s too but the call from those woody phones was driving me crazy.

Congrats! An awesome pair of phones. I've auditioned these a few times at our local hifi store.
I really like them, but they are very warm. These would be amazing for classical. Oh, man these would shine with a tube amp. What type of music do you listen to?

GREAT choice.

Especially with tubes. Can't go wrong IMO.

I have a vintage pair with the buttons and tan leather headband. Looks alittle beat-up but i still love it to bits.

Try some jazz (vocals, quartets, whatever!) when u get yours. Absolutely to die for.

Very few phones sound any better... especially with the Marantz SA-8001 CDP and the DV332 - hard to believe actually!

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but.........

Do most of you think that the RS-1 is worth the extra money over the RS-2? I bought the SR-80s a couple of months ago, and have been loving them. I'm thinking about jumping up to something really good; a set to keep me happy for a long time to come. I will obviously try and listen to both pair, but what's the conensus on head-fi??

thanks,

steve

I've spent some time with the RS-1 and I really like them too. I'll be honest though, it took some time for me to fully realize what they are capable of. It was either that, or the previous owner never actually fully burned them in.

The phones are obviously colored, but I think these might be the first headphones I've had where I can actually live with the coloration and not eventually get annoyed with it (although that's still yet to be decided). The mid range is very lush and textured, and they image very well, but some details are obscured just a tiny, tiny bit compared to some other high end headphones. Bass is great and is of much higher quality than the lower-end Grado's. Overall they are slightly dark sounding, although they can be bright at times with certain equipment and recordings.

They are very enjoyable out of my mp3 player, but I definitely prefer them with the Mapletree amp I have. They are easy to drive, but I ultimately feel that if you're going to spend that much money on them then have to at least have a pretty good source and amp. Either that, or reserve your judgment until you are able to afford those two.

Also, although some people complain about the lack of sound stage, I don't have a problem with it. I think that too big a soundstage can be just as bad as one that is too little because it takes away from some of the qualities that make rock music and metal enjoyable, namely hearing a band as a band and not a bunch of instruments that seem dissociated from each other.

On a side note, I did actually own the SR-225's at one point and I remember not being too impressed with them. I didn't have the best equipment at the time, but I remember preferring my MS1's, which I still think are the best headphone under 100 bucks.

I really hope you enjoy them jacdan and everyone else who ordered them. Make sure to burn them in for around 100 hours and give them at least two weeks to grow on you if you're not impressed right away.

In my case, I like Classical, Soundtracks, and 70s/80s rock but symphonic is definitely what I listen to most of the time.

SptsNaz: I'm pretty sure I'll like them. The 225s have really gotten me hooked on the Grado sound although it did take time, probably due to burn-in. I'm surprised about the lack of soundstage that you mention. I thought with the deeper wooden design combined with the bowl pads, they would have pretty spacious soundstage.

The soundstage is not bad by any means (especially with bowls), but it is clearly not in the same realm as the HD580 or the DT880's. It seems more realistic though, especially with rock music and such

I never tried them with Classical, but I'd wager they wouldn't be my first choice when it comes to that because of the coloration and lack of soundstage compared to the other cans. They might be good for choral works and smaller scale stuff like quartets though.

If you want a Grado that's good with classical you'd probably be better off with the GS1000 or the HP-2 (only the latter of which I've owned but sold). The HP2's didn't have the greatest soundstage either, but their neutrality and amazing lower mid-range made for good classical listening while I had them.

I briefly toyed with the idea of getting the GS1000s but cost and the shift away from the "standard" Grado look put me off them, at least for now, although I'd be interested in knowing how those larger sized drivers sound. When upgrade bug hits me again in a few years, I may audition them.

Don't worry. I honestly think that if you like the SR-225's you will definitely like the RS1. The improvement you notice will definitely be dependent on the source and amp though. I can't vouch for how much of a difference there might be without a headphone amp or out of an mp3 player (not sure exactly what equipment you have right now).
