I have my new $31 CD780s - compare notes in this thread if you like

I don't think you guys are going to get what you think of as bass impact or slam from the CD780s. What I mean by bass slam is a snap or a punch or whack as opposed to a boom or a thud or a thump, when, in fact, there should be a punch or a whack or a snap to go with the bass. For what I call slam, I think it has more to do with how the upper bass is integrated with the mid and low bass, not the volume of bass. If what you're looking for is disproportionately high-volume bass

slam, I don't think the CD780s have it.

These headphones are really comfortable but also loose as ... (insert your own joke here). I often like to sit back and relax on my chair but the darn thing keeps slipping and it's rather position sensitive.(More so than any other headphones I've head) Do others have the same problem with CD3000 or any of those headphone with "self-adjust" headbands?

I don't have a problem with them falling off. I have been sleeping with mine for a while now. I do notice that they are very forgiving to producing good sound when far off axis. They can be pushed forward, back, up, down, or uneven on left and right. It always sounds good no matter what position.

Cheap bass tweak:
Those who want a little more bass, try this trick. Take your fluffiest bed pillow and lay down with your headphones on. My pillow is filled with down feathers and I have another pillow below it. Did you get a little more bass? It is still not enough bass for me, but I like it.

My CD580s (now in semi-retirement) got much use and became a little loose over time. I bent the very thick metal wires on the headband inward just a little and they stopped slipping so much. I suppose you could try the same thing with the CD780s, though I'd be hesitant to try it.

My CD780s don't slip, and I do find them very good laying-down phones, too, as hottyson mentioned.

This thread was fun to read but has me itching for a pair.

I already ordered myself a pair of Sennheiser HD-280's and seeing as most of you guys all have heard the Koss PortaPro/KSC stuff .. I thought I might ask ... is the sound quality jump (if there is one) very noticeable from the KSC-35's? I am itching to get a more "portable" 2nd pair and these would not qualify, but if the sound is really that much more impressive, I think I might hold off on portables for a possible try of the ety's around christmas.

(and for piece of mind .. how do the px's hold up?)

to me the porta pros and the ksc 35's sound identical, but the portapros have that extra bass you get when you hold the ksc35's close agianst your ear. (the protapro's headband does that for you, but comfortably).

the 780's trounce the portapros though for everything but bass slam.

woohoo page 11!

These things leak as much as the SR-60s?

Not quite... but that's not saying much.

First of all, I wanna thank the original poster and others who convinced me to jump on the great deal. I felt pretty lucky since I received the 2 cables, and removing the refuribished sticker was a snap. Most of your observations and comments were dead on, and I really like the 780's. I only have the ksc-35's and tried the v6 for about a month before I returned them to Fry's. I really don't find them bright at all, and although their bass is less impactful than the 35's, I don't think they're deficient in that department. They're ultra comfortable, have excellent detail, and are great for classical and jazz listening.

Now the bad news. Even after about 150 hrs burn in, the right side is louder than the left. I've tried several different sources, tried both cables, and all sorts of music. I made sure the cable clicked in all the way. Voice, drums, piano, and almost all seem to be coming from the right side, about the 4 o'clock position. After thinking about returning them to ecost and getting my money back, I decided to send them to Sony's service center and have them fixed. I figured I'd spend an extra $5 to get some real nice headphones that I like, rather than spending the $5 to get my $38 back with nothing to show for it.
I just shipped them this afternoon.

I just found out about ecost's px200 sale, and was tempted to try them out.
But after reading several posts and comments about how they're similar or a little less to the 35's, I saved my wallet some grief. I really need to get rid of my weakness to $30 ish headphones. I did see the philips 890 at The Good Guys

, but I think I should save up and move on up the ladder to better headphones.

Arggh, just my luck these days...The great grado 225 deal didn't fall through, and now this....

Hope they fix the 780's correctly.

Btw, Ebay has a few auctions on the 780's from Sony's store. One has a Buy It Now price of $34.95, plus $10 S & H, and sales tax.

This thread is like the Energizer bunny - it keeps going and going and going........

After using my 780's for over a week, I'll say they're teriffic headphones. Comparing them to my ATH-A900's, they seem more suited to laid-back musical applications and are slightly more comfortable, although the A900's are easily wearable for hours on end. the CD780's will become my "armchair" cans.

The A900's are more of a rock can and have better impact. I've created two separate rigs - the MZ-R50->Lafferty "Headbanger" amp->A900's, and my newest one, the D-EJ925->Super Mini->CD780's. I'll be using the latter set-up, at home, where I have all my CD collection. (actually, I may end up switching amps, depending on how different these sound)

To boot, the 780's can be used, directly, out of an MD unit quite nicely. They are the most versatile headphones I own, and certainly worth way more than the $74 CDN price I paid.

Thanks for the CD780 update. I'm finding that I like them better and better the more I use them. My main concerns were bass and brightness. If the bass is light, it's just by a hair, and the mild brightness starts well up out of the midrange, so that it's not a fatiguing brightness but rather just a fun extra zing.

So for me, like you, they are really standing up to extended listening and comparisons with my other heaphones. I will say I definitely prefer them to Grado SR60s for overall sound.

I just got these today. First impressions are these are the most comfortable headphones that I have ever used. The sound kinda reminds me of a more refined version of the D66 eggos which I like. I don't find them overly bright at all, before the mailman came, I was listening to a pair of shure e2s and coming from those, the extended treble on these are a very welcome change.

These will be my all purpose headphones as I can't really find a source to dedicate them to right now.

I only got one cord but the sticker just peeled right off very cleanly. Another thing is do the pads on these come off? They seemed to wrap pretty tightly around.

PodMan -- Glad you like your CD780s.

RBISHE YO!!! The pads do come off. The manual talks about it, for cleaning purposes. I took mine off and put them back on... it's not easy at all to do, but it can be done. There's a very weird white foam substance under the pads that makes things all the more difficult.
