Hugo M Scaler by Chord Electronics - The Official Thread

I got my hands on some 7n silver cable from harmonic technology, and some oyoide bnc plugs (expensive plugs!) There are literally thousands of ferrites available, I thought of making the cable , terminating it on one end, and matching the ferrites to the diameter of the harmonic technology cable, so on and so forth. How do yours sound? I’ve had bad experiences with ferrites in the past so this is quite an interesting approach

What ferrites Did you use and how dis you approach spacing? Thanks
Ferrites used 74270053
Nitrile 70 O'Rings 8 x 3mm
Nitrile 70 O'Rings 8 x 2mm
For the spacing between the ferrites I used four 8 x 3mm O'Rings and five 8 x 2mm O'Rings which works out to 22mm space.
This will give a cable near to 1 meter.
Hope this helps you with your Diy cables for your M Scaler.
Thanks.

I just got my mscaler and want to test to make sure it's working before I dive into expensive BNC cables.

Which would you recommend out of these 3 options:
Monoprice BNC M/M RG59U - 6ft $2.65
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=626

Monoprice Viper Series HD-SDI RG-6 BNC Cable, 6ft $8.99
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=16183

Monoprice Viper 12G SDI BNC Cable, 6ft, Black $22.99
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=39940

FYI, bought and tried these cables and there are drop outs:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GRQD7WC/ref=dp_iou_view_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have large amps and a pre-amp close to the mscaler. It's Parasound hear with large toroidal transformers. Could that cause the drop outs?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Honestly if you can, I would just use the stock cables that come with the MScaler or go straight to Blue Jeans BNC cables. I wouldn’t bother with cheaper stuff...

Thanks will check out Bluejeans cables.

Agreed, I think I have replied to you on FaceBook also saying Blue Jeans cables are properly made.

Hi folks. Have people tried the MScaler with non-Chord DACs? How much sound improvement did they give? And specifically, has anyone tried the M Scaler with an RME ADI-2 DAC?

Some people have and it gives a useful boost to sound quality but I don't think it is worth buying an Mscaler and not be able to use it in dual BNC mode. Perhaps if you have a longer term plan to get a Chord DAC then it would be worth it though. Anyway, how about a Qutest instead of the RME? It sounds better anyway even without the Mscaler (I did have an RME to compare, it soon went). :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Personally, I was extremely happy when I added my M Scaler to a TT Mk 1 and had funds not permitted moving to the better ergonomics of the TT 2, no batteries and also full dual-BNC usage of the M Scaler I would have been just as happy to stick with the TT Mk 1. This is probably not true of many other single-BNC connected DACs though, as you say.

I tried yesterday to connect 2 Toslink cables to Optical IN 1 and 2 on M Scaler and was not able because they are too close one to another. Pfff, what a "feature".

I have no problem but with these opticals which I often have both plugged in at the same time and as you can see they fit easily and with space between them. But some 'audiophile' optical cables seem to have needlessly wide plugs which do no good at all anyway. I have previously had issues with some fatboy optical plugs not sitting snugly within the recess on DACs and I unscrewed the offending plug body to find that it was just needless decoration.

Well, I am not near them right now but I found a good picture:

And yes, seem a little bit closer. And indeed, the cables have bigger connectors. However, I keep my opinion that it is an unfortunate design of these. I remember Chord had some problems also with RCA out on Hugo 2.

Well! Chord told you that the plug should not bigger than the black square!
