I just found a pair of Grado HP 1000's in my closet from G-d knows how many years ago. I currently using a pair of ALO modded 325i's for my portable rig. Are the HP's worth recupping? Thanks.

Recupping?! Nooo! You do not want to change the cups AT ALL! What do you think of them and what condition are they in and what kind of cable does it have? Any original box or papers? Depending on the answers to these questions they could be worth close to $2000 or possibly more if the price has got even more insane since I last checked. I would keep them though.

wow, I was just going to write "in before the wave," but walked to the other room first, and now I'm already behind the crest.

I recommend that you mod away on those suckers. Not enough people around here have attempted mods to see what those old Grados can really do. I mean, can they be brought up to modern standards, or no?

As the two previous posters I say that you should stay clear of modifyin them in any way.
Cause depending on their condition and model (HP-1, HP-2 or HP-3) they sell for anything between $1200 and $2200. Modifying might decrease the value

Not only would it damage the value but it would very likely make them sound worse. facelvega is kidding, in case you were confused.

Unfortunately they no longer have cups at all but otherwise look mint. How can you tell if they're HP-1, 2, or 3's? I see no other identifying #'s other than HP 1000.

Umm ok I think we are not understanding what you mean by "cups". I was thinking the earcups? Please elaborate.

If it has switches sticking out the back of the earcups then it is an HP-1.

There were less than 50 HP3s made and most of them had the drivers matched the same as the HP2s anyway, it is most likely that they are HP2s. If they are real HP3s (and never were sent in to have the drivers matched to HP2s which yet more HP3s did) then their value would probably increase significantly, but only for collectors.

The HP-1 have polarity switches like you see in this picture:

The HP-2 and 3 don't have the switch. So I am not sure how you see the difference between them.

Originally all the HP1000s had their model number written in black ink in the same spot that RS-1 serial numbers are. But they rub off easily. Other than that, you can't tell them apart except for the stuff I mentioned.

Sorry I meant the "pads" are gone, not the cups. They have no polarity switch.
