Yes Have Had.

I’m a monogamous headphone user and only have 1 pair of headphones to use at any time. It seems since I joined Head-Fi I buy a pair of RS-1’s almost every year. I enjoy them but my heart wanders and I move on.

Depending on your audio preferences I would recommend getting the Flat Pads from Todd the Vinyl Junkie to use with the RS-1’s. It’ll bring out the bass and remove some of the sibilance.

I also went to flats with my MS Pro's.
It's really a mental trick that occurs when you sit there comparing bowls to flats. When you do that - most will say flats muffle the sound etc. - really not so. Listen to each on their own

Joe had it right from the beginning.

I'd just buy 'em new if I were you. There's really not much of a price difference; your guaranteed a mint condition pair; and, most importantly, you'll have a solid return policy should you not like phones or should they be defective in any way (Grado isn't exactly renowned for its quality control standards).

Just remember that the style of RS-1's has changed significantly in the last few months; and that many websites haven't reflected this re-design as of yet (in other words, don't expect a model with RS-1 buttons if you purchase new).

I have the RS-1 and RS-2, which I bought used. I find they are both very good, but different. Most of the RS-1 I saw used were $530-$570, and most of the used RS-2 I saw were $360-400. TTVJ.com will sell new RS-1 for about $645, and the RS-2 for about $445. So, figure on a 18-22% loss if you buy new and turn around to sell them.

The RS-2 I got first, and they have a more up-front-mids and rounded off sound to them, like an HD600, but with a more confined soundstage and more energy. I re-cabled them and got a nice bump in the highs and lows, so they feel more equal through their frequency response and not too dull. They are better for rock, jazz, new age and electronic, but not so much with classical.

When I got the RS-1, they already had the APS re-cable done, and they seem to be a little more open and airy, with a little more emphasis on highs and lows, rather than the mids. They have more of the Grado "house" sound. They seem to do well with everything.

Both can sound "okay" with the wrong amp and source, and sound "fantastic" with the right one. I think overall, if I had started with the RS-1, I would not have been looking for more Grados.

One other model to consider is the HF-1 for about $400 used, which I think are pretty close to the RS-1, and are half-wood/half-plastic. I like them better than the RS-2 I think.

Thank you headphone addict. I guess I will just go straight to the RS-1. Like other people have agreed with me, if I know I will eventually buy them, why not get them right away.

I might get them new for 550 off ebay but we will see. ONe thing, I have the money, but the problem is convincing the parents headphones $600 are worth it.

I was more or less in the same boat not too long ago. I was coming from the sr225 as my starting point in the grado chain. I started to consider an upgrade after about a year so. After mulling it over and a lil nudge from my girlfriend (whom put down $250 as incentive

). I pulled the trigger on new pair of rs-1's (with button). No complaints here, lovin em and couldn't be happier

Seriously.
