Just wondering how you can tell the difference between a HP2 and HP3. I cant seem to tell them apart by looking at them neither says HP2 or HP3 and use the same material and overall design. If anyone knows or has both can tell me that would be great. Pics would help to.

AFAIK, there is only 1 simple way to distinguish both, they're 95 % the same except that the HP-3 has HP-3 written on each cups with a black marker, where the pads can hide it.
Also, the driver's matching wasn't quite as good at 1 dB instead of 0.5 dB for the HP-1/HP-2.

is it possible that the marker can fade away, making it look like it was a HP2?

All the time!
I heard that since the HP3 was considered inferior to the HP2, many people rubbed off the "HP3" marking from them, in order to sell them as HP2's! I bet theyre sorry, now that the HP3 is a highly valued rarity

Still has less value than a pair of HP2, last nice pair I saw went for around $1200.

They sound the same as I have HP1s,HP2s HP3s,all with signature ultrabandwitdh cables.THe HP1s sound differant then the 2s& 3s.
Other then the black marker on cups saying HP3 there is no way to tell.
& the marker wears off.

It's written on the original box and it looks like this, written on the headphone:
