Buying an amp just for an IEM is not worth it IMO. Enjoy your music!

The Fiio E6 is actually a good inexpensive option.  It will have the ability to provide a fuller sound while still being clean since it is being done via line out.

Fiio E6 with L1 cable from fiio that plugs into the bottom of the ipod will probably improve the sound. Im not sure if it works on the classic but it woks on the ipod mini so im guessing it does. The signal from the bottom 30 pin connector supposedly does not go through the ipods built in headphone amp so it will be cleaner signal going through the E6. The E6 has 2 different levels of bass boost and at only 30$, is unbeatable in value.

FLAC --> Cowon _ _ (BBE) --> SE535

Had the setup with an S9 was very pleased with it. There are newer players for you to consider as well =)
My current is the same but with 425s and it's pretty much no frills and fulfills my needs.

I don't know why everyone keeps bragging about the BBE feature on the Cowons. I never use it on my i7.

I was in the same situation like you going around trying out couples of amps and third party cables but am still stuck with them driven thru my Iphone. There are certainly some improvements you get with amping and some third party cables but IMHO, it will not be worth the few hundred dollars.
I'm not telling you what you should do with your money but I did spent my few hundred of hard earned dollars on a HD650/E7/E9 combo.

My setup:

IPod classic 7G (rockboxed) > pure silver LOD > JDS Labs C421 (AD8620) > 6N OFHC SPC cable > Shure SE535

Sounds amazing, better balanced than stock, more details and highs improve a lot, bass becomes tighter and they don't have such a thick sound anymore.

Now to get them custom reshelled :)

If you don't like your shure's sound signature maybe you need to EQ it first before spending money.
