Win7 has a LOT of drivers automatically in the OS.  I'd suggest that you look for updates after the install, but it should be no problem.

Why wouldn't one want to turn it off, really?  Mine is always off.

And if you say 'unwanted code being executed', I'm gonna laugh.

More like potential hijacking of the Administator account(s) and the powers it holds via malicious code, particuarly in corparate / networked environment.

Your motherboard drivers WON'T be installed on their own; Windows 7 uses standard drivers, where as the ones you can download have optimizations.  It will work, but not to it's best.  Graphics card drivers should be no problem.

I'd definitely say install Windows 7, then go one by one searching online for and installing the latest version of all of your drivers.  Motherboard, sound card, graphics card, and ethernet/WiFi.  Those are the big ones for which updating the drivers for every 3-6 months is recommended.

1. I'm not in a corporate environment.
2. All my networked shares are read-only.
3. Potential hijacking of high-level accounts is absurd to even think about.  Besides that, UAC doesn't stop a single thing.  It just adds a layer of security that the 'User' or 'PEBKAC' easily negates.

I went to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit from XP about five weeks ago.  I was unable to get a driver for my ESI QuataFire 610 audio device.  Nor was there a free driver for my scanner.  Everything else worked OK.

Try this.

Control panel > Sounds, speech audio devices > Sounds and audio devices > Audio [make sure your DAC is default device] > Hardware > [Select your DAC] > Properties > Audio Devices > USB Audio devices [your DAC] > check boxes "Use audio features on this device" and "Do not map through this device"
