How much have you spent on tubes for your amp recently?

How much would you spend on a small signal tube like a 6922 or 12xx7 type?

The prices from dealers are getting very high now for something like a Genelex B749 or similar.

Depends on which ones you are talking about. There are a few tubes which I would pay more than others, like Amperex 7308 white label, Amperex 6922 PQ white label, "D"-getter Amperex 6DJ8 and 6922, Amperex pinch waist 6922, Siemens Cca, Mullard 10M master 6DJ8.

Basic economic principle of supply and demand at work. As more and more people buy NOS tubes, and the supply continue to dwindle, the prices will only go up. I've been collecting for the past 10 years and they just keep going up and up. And most of the local sources have vanished.

I have an MPX3 SLAM
$200, but that's a ton of tubes.

The most expensive: $25, least: $6.

My faves so far: 2x 6BL7 for output $8ea,
Drivers: {TS 12AY7, Amp? 7119, TS 6829, Syl 6414, TS 5687}
< $20 each
6829 + BLs so far is my overall fave combo. It tames older overbright
albums but doesn't lose much on the really well recorded stuff.
For good recordings the TS: 12AY7 + 2xTS 5687. It reveals so much that
in some cases I feel like I'm listening to a different album
(in a very good way!)

All {6,8,12}SN7s I've tried are definitely sub par in my system, to my
ears. Granted, I haven't tried any of the $$$$$ *SN7s, but so far, it
doesn't seem necessary.

Be honest and admit- You don't know what you're missing because you just don't know.

I would feel the same way if I had dropped $700 bones on tubes like you!

I find that if I am patient, and avoid shopping the dealers that require premium prices for their wares, that my modest collection has not been that costly. The part I find the most difficult to rationalize is the high cost of shipping, that's what kills me. I sure wish that there were local dealers, instead of everything being mail order.

Last week I spent $10.00 for (4) 6414's & $4.00 for (1) 12az7. That's only $14.00 before shipping. The shipping exceeded half the price of the tubes themselves.

The 6829 sounds like an interesting tube, which adapter does it require to use on a SP MPX amp?

I have all the best 6/12sn7gt's .... TS black glass round plate, Ken Rad black glass, RCA gray glass, Sylvania tall bottle vt-231/ 7n7 etc.... I like the 2c51/5670 and the 6414/6829/ types better in most cases. The 6/12sn7gt'a are still excellent tubes but they are no more open or detailed and some of them seem colored in comparison. I still use the TS 12sn7gt clear glass, gray boxplate but I prefer the 2c51 or 12av7/6414 types more often than not. The 6/12sn7gt's have a richer tonality but this richness sometimes comes across as an added thickness and opaqueness compared to the cleaner, more neutral examples like the TS 2c51 or GE 6414 grayplate.

I would generally agree but I actually prefer the richer tonality of the 6SN7Gt's.

Have you tried any of the 6DJ8's?

I'll agree. Thanks Mitch for your audition of tubes. It was a nice experience.

No not yet. I might try some 6bz7's or 6bk7's soon though.

I too prefer the richness of the 6sn7 & equivilants much of the time too. However, sometimes it's nice for a change of pace, or depending on a particular disc playing, to switch over to the "9 pin family" of tubes. That is one of the really nice benifits of the SinglePower Amps, is the vast array of tubes that can be used and the sounds that they can produce. It's sometimes mind boggling to think of all the possibilties.
