Headphoneus Supremus
Value has been getting worse and worse since the 70's. In 1977, $50 got you a KOSS Pro/4AA, which completely annihilates a huge amount of headphones in the <$300 range today.
My modded 4AAA is just as good as an HD600. It was $100 starting price, but dropped to $50 after a while too.
Another is the Sony DR-Z5, which was designed to highlight the extremely high sound quality of portable CD players, and was somewhere around $70 new. This headphone competes at the $500 mark. And its the cheapest can in the DR-Z line.
Of course, the prices aren't directly interchangeable, there is some inflation to consider. I believe I calculated $100 in the 70's to be equal to $400 or so nowadays. But it's still quite a significant difference.
