4, 1 closed, 1 open, 1 electrostatic, 1 grado = The Perfect Lineup maybe with a king of headphones or 2, eg R10, Orpheus, L3000, K1K

I have 9 pairs of headphones at the moment and HF-2 and D7K coming shortly, but aside from limited edition cans, I will end up staying with less once I find what Im looking for.

PRO900
ATH-W5000
AH-D2000
CD-3000
JVC HA-DX1000

I don't know why, I just listen to one and when it gets old I pick up another.
Every once in a while I change amps.

Big time.

Ok, I have the Ultrasone Edition 9's. Sold to me by a fellow head-fier and
a true gent. We talk occasionally (some frequently) of life-changing
experiences. Well for me the Edition 9's were just that. They bring me
closer to the music and I could not imagine ever being without them.

I'm listening now to Karajan / Beethoven / The symphonies (SACD/1963).

It's 3:47am and I'm wishing that dawn would sleep a little longer.

Yes well I smile back at ya.
It does something good for me to read about someone else such as yourself enjoying a new piece of kit, especially one that brings the music closer to the heart.
Isn't that the real joy of this hobby anyway? Expense be damned.

Too true Digger.

The worries of the world just melt away when I wear these phones.

Enjoy every precious moment.

I think I've got about 10 pairs but I think my magic number would be 4. I don't need 10 pairs and I often reflect on the excessiveness of it. The problem is, when you get in deep it's hard to pair down the herd.
As stupid as it sounds, I develop connections with certain pieces of audio gear, headphones in particular (I think because they seem most 'personal' of anything).
Certain pairs I feel I have to have for sentimental reasons...

ER4P --> my first ever pair of good cans. I think I bought my first pair in 2002. I've bought and sold around 5 pairs, thinking I could live without them and move on to something else. I've got a pair now that I won't sell since I don't want to just end up buying them again. I've probably only listened once this year, but I know I have them and I like that.

RS-1 --> my first ever pair of great cans. I've gone through the same sell/buy cycle with these as I have with the ER4Ps. I've got a pair now that I'm fairly certain I won't be selling now.

HD580 Jubilee --> probably my favorite overall headphone and I don't know why. They have magical allure with me. I've got a beat up pair and a NOS stock pair (that I'm using) and I'm fairly certain I'll never sell either pair, mainly due to the fact that I'll have a terrible time finding them again. It took me 1 year to find a pair when I started looking. Also, I don't want to sell since I probably paid WAY too much for the NOS pair

Ironically, the 'best' pair of headphones I have, my K1000's I would have the easiest time selling if I had to since I don't really have any connection with them yet.

Anyway, I think 4 would be my magical number since what I feel would be necessary would be:
1 IEM (for times when great isolation is necessary)
1 bright can
1 dark can
1 workout/beat around can (KSC-75)
