How many CDs have you ripped so far?

There is a stand alone program for converting to other formats. But I prefer to use foobar for that job anyway. For portables, the quality of the output is usually not the best, and space is at a premium so I think mp3 is the best choice here. Unless you keep all your music on the DAP with no space for it on the computer.

Anyone else using TAK instead of FLAC? TAK is lossles compression and will reduce the size by a few 100 MBs for most of you I reckon.

I have been following the TAK development since January 2007, and it sure looks promising.
There are two major downsides though:
1. MS Windows only.
2. No support on portable players.

Just over 250 CD's. All my personal collection, bought and paid for! All FLAC, 80GB total. This site has been an inspiration to get on with 21st century audio (and other media) and I'm so glad I did. I need to get a 2TB drive so I can finish ripping my DVD collection, again all bought and paid for as part of my personal collection.

No one is implying that anyone who is ripping CDs or other media to play with a computer as the source is doing so with anything other discs which he/she purchased and still own. There is no support here for illegal downloading or ripping.

For sure, but it kinda sad to me that a person has to stress that fact that he has "no illegal" music.
My best friend and I still share our mix tapes even though they are CDs now. It's a shame that although we have been sharing for over thirty years, especially since we are on different coasts, that our sharing is somehow "wrong". Sorry for the OT but that post got to me with the stressing of the legality of his rips.
[edit] BTW most of our "sharing " consists of legally sharable live music.

I don't. iTunes displays the number of albums and songs. All I have to do is read.

so i don't see the point in ripping them

Backup copy? I've had about 10 CD's suffer from CD rot, or unable to read (found a big hole in silver coating on album, and others looked like been put into the microwave)

how does it compare to APE in "extra high" mode?
apparently APE is GPL and can be decoded on many OS, Tak is closed source and windows only :
FLAC - comparison

they're not crazy, they didn't try APE and TAK in their highest compression mode........where FLAC lacks quite a bit.

PS: ahhh, dBpoweramp doesn't support it.

I used APE a long time ago... at least I tried it out with maximum compression. I didn't like it at all. Did not get very good performance. For example, skip ahead took AGES to seek. FLAC had no such problems. Since trying TAK, I switched very quickly and converted all FLAC files into TAK.

I havn't tired it, but I think you can use wine to run foobar2000 on linux. If you can make that work, then you don't have to use windows to have TAK. The author has said he plans to go open source one day. Maybe he wants to perfect it some more 1st. Going open source should improve compatibility a lot so I hope one day it does get GPL'd.

yes seeking is a pain w/ APE in "insane" mode, but w/ "extra high" it's perfectly fine.

how do you convert APE to TAK easily? dBpoweramp doesn't seem to support it.

and does it compress much better than "Extra High APE"

Sorry auee, I wasn't trying to imply anyone was doing anything else! I've run across enough errors that I wouldn't ever actually get rid of the CD's I've ripped anyway, they just go into storage.

My reasons for wanting my computer as a source are simple... convenience for music and to keep the kids from destroying all of the DVD's!

No offense taken. Just wanted to point out that we are all ripping are own CDs for use with a computer as source.

I agree with you that having one's music played back via a computer and external DAC is convenient. It is much better than the CD carousels which were popular several years ago.

I am getting an incredible amount of enjoyment using a Mac Mini and iTunes which can be controlled remotely by an iphone, itouch or Apple's remote with Frontrow. My CD players are used much less frequently now and only when I want to play a CD which I have not ripped yet or a new CD which I want to hear before I rip it.
