HiFiMan RE-600 Review

a comparison with the RE-272 would be most welcome

Compared in balanced mode on HM-801, the 600 are slightly superior to the 272, yet in the same league.
272 are more dry and analytical with some snap while the 600 are more organic, more rounded so to speak.
The 600 have fuller bass that make it sound more bold. The sound is definitely more fluid, sweeter, and natural, although not as extended in the highs, not as airy up top.
It's all very subtle though. They share a similar overall tonality.

To me, the 600 are a mix between the 272 analytical and the 262 organic signature with the added fluidity/sweetness of the 400 and a tad more boldness in the bass department.
I was a little disappointed at first because I thought they sounded very much like my 272. But after over 200 hrs of burning, I can now hear the difference. I hear why they are advertised as Hifiman's best IEMs to date. 600 sound a little warmer, more analogue and fluid, more musical and natural.

I still highly regard the 272 for its overall balance, tuning and extension. Properly EQed, the 272 sub bass and highs quality are very impressive to me. But we're talking extremities here.
600 beat everything in between.
For most music styles, the 600 sounds more natural and authentic. For electronic music, some may prefer the 272 (I like them both)

A version of the 600 with the 272 sub bass and extended  airy highs would be a killer IEM, maybe the Re-6000...

In the end, I was going to sell my 272 but decided to sell my 262 and 400 instead ; )

Yeah well... Even if they did that, the cable is still prone to tangling more than anything for some bloody reason.
No matter what I do, it just won't stop tangling up and would never lay flat. Just never.
Maybe they should try "11 thousand times tangle test" instead... I guarantee the cable will almost certainly die after 50 - 100...
No matter how hard I try, the cable just does whatever it wants and whenever I pick the HP up, the cable looks horribly... Even though it was fine when I rolled it up.

I had a similar problem with the cable used for the Zune headphones. Ironing them (While covering them of course) made them more bearable.

Has anyone been selling brand new ones for less than $400 ?

http://acgears.com/ has the occasional Head-Fi discount code, plus you get points towards other purchases. I bought the 901+600 combo when they were released with a discount that ended up being greater than the current combo discounts.

Full-bodied, dynamic and open. Bass is slamming on these babies. If you're not running these off a balanced amp, I suggest the lower model.

Great thanks!

I porbably wont be running them off a balanced amp so I might go for the RE-400 instead. Unless I can get UE900/BA-200 or XBA-40 really cheap.

I have briefly compared RE600 balanced on 901 and single ended on my DX100 and couldn't really tell a difference..... =(
If you have no intention to go balanced, ever, then go for the single ended RE600s!

Yes it does. I remember plugging out the 3.5mm plug to try it on the 901.

What I heard was more of a sound sig difference than technical differences.. But more similarities than differences.

I wish there was a big difference. I love the look and design of 901!

But it wasn't compelling enough for me to change to 901 on the spot.

I will still buy it down the road, that's for sure. But for now, I will have to focus on other area of my other hobbies first.
