HiFiMAN RE-00 Earphone Review by mark2410

How is it without the foam and filters

Peakier. The damping foam is there for a reason.

The RE-00's frequency response has a slight upper mids bump, similar to Etymotic IEMs or the Ortofon e-Q8. This makes them sound very clear and intimate with (female) vocals, but also borderline shouty. That kind of sound signature requires a particularly smooth response to avoid sounding obtrusive. I wouldn't recommend to remove the foam entirely.

These are cheap enough to play with. I may try a small vent if I feel they could use it. I suspect the foam is appropriate as installed, at least for me. I could never acclimate to the highs of a b2 for instance. I even found the 2.5k bump in PL50s a bit much at times. I suspect the foam mod makes the bass harmonics more apparent and thereby has the bass sounding more delineated as opposed to increasing the bass amplitude relative to other ranges.

Good thing I came across that review.  I decided to give it a go and my 00 are on their way now!  Hoping they will replace my lovely RE-262.  The rubber on the 262 cable is broken at a couple of places and the rubber itself is stiff.  Too bad, Sarah Mclachland sounds freaking nice on the 262

well they arent quite the sam as the 262, the 262 is warmer and much morelike the 600.  however..... yeah for the price they are essentially right up there in quality.  they just willbe a little lighter, drier and a little more noticable in the treble than your 262.   soo you may when you get want to graba  little bass boosting amp.

still when you get come back and let us know what you make of them.

Mine is coming

Fingers crossed I'll get mine tomorrow.

you both have to come back and post what you make of them, just to see what little stunners they are because im still convinced that them being priced so incredibly cheaply makes peolpe assume they cant be RE-0 and RE-ZERO levels of amazing.  with the price so low i know i thought that they couldnt possibly be as good as the old ones, so until i heard them i was highly sceptical.

Just got my RE-OO from Massdrop today..been listening for one hour...one word...UNBELIEVABLE!! Listening to MJ Greatest hits and Thriller has me literally scared! My first Hifiman so I can't compare but totally realistic sound, beautiful tone quality with Excellent instrument separation...soundstage is wiiiide with just enough bass. I don't know how I'm going to take these out of my ears and go back to normal living...The detail is shocking...soundstage is wide and deep...all of this is IMO and even I am skeptical..I just know if they get any better my buying days might be over....

Thanks for the info. My 00 was waiting on me in the mail this afternoon. I am actually listening music with them as I am writing. I agree with you when you say they are lighter then the 262. For those saying re262 arent bass enough, do not buy these 00 hehe.

But for the price, I like their precision and female voices sound great with them. Now will see how long the wire will last before the rubber gets stiff and break

Just received these in the mail from Massdrop.  I've been listening to the RE400's for about a month now, and have really grown to love them.  But in comparison to the RE400, the RE-00's are definitely a great improvement.  What stands out most to me with the 00's over the 400's is the sparkle in the high end that is lacking in the 400's.  I am also more able to distinguish individual instruments through the 00's.  A specific example was when listening to Haydn's The Creation. There is a section where two flutes alone play a minute or so in.  In the 400's I can tell that there are two flutes because of the slight delay of one of the flutes coming in, outside of that I wouldn't know there was more than one instrument playing.  I listened to this same section in the 00's, and I can actually hear two distinct flutes.  I'm fairly new to the audiophile arena, so I was pretty floored that was even possible.  That I'm getting for $34, what my $79 RE400 are not capable of is amazing to me!!!  Definitely loving these so far.  The bass response is not far from the 400's.  Possibly just a smidgen less responsive at the low end.  But again there is a detail at the low end that in the 400's seems a bit mushy in comparison.  Female vocals have a beautiful "shimmer" to them, also not heard in my 400's.  These also sound less in my head, than the 400's.  I don't hear left ear and right ear, but feel more like the music is in front and around me.  Awesome pair of IEM's. Would love to know if there is anything comparable to these for the value.
