On initial impression the bass sounds closer to my 4 screw HE-6.

The initial sound is very pleasing with the v.2. Great bass heft... no sibilant treble.

I just received the HE-6SE V2 that I purchased on the Adorama special. Sound is impressive. I already took off the grills, which improved soundstage quite a bit. I'm looking to swap pads. I already ordered the Brainwavz Sheepskin Angled Pads. But from what I'm reading here, the general consensus is that the DC Ether Pads are the best for these headphones. I've seen recommendations for both the Ether Angled Pads (pleather) and the Ether 2 Pads. Can anyone give me a recommendation of one of these Ether pad models over the other? Also, do I need an adapter ring to connect these to the headphones? Do you know a source for quickly and cheaply getting an adapter ring? Thanks for your help with this.

How did you remove the grill?

I just removed the existing adapter rings and used them with Ether pads.

How to Remove Hifiman Round Grills

Outside the cup is a barely visible plastic ring that has 3 divits that hold the grill on to the cup. Pull out the 3 divits, then you can remove the grill and foam. There are some nice designs for more open grills that will allow you to still protect the innards from accidental damage and let through a maximum amount of air.

Where to buy those custom open grills?

Are these worth it for $700? I hear lot of mixed opinions on it.

Yes, if you can properly power them. The HE6se’s are still hard to drive. There might be slight differences in the sound compared to the older HE6 models. Don’t let that stop you from picking up a pair. It’s been proven that the special edition models have been changed when comparing them with the older models, but so what. This latest iteration might be the most comfortable version. With that said, make no mistake about it the HE6se’s do produce excellent quality sound, still........
