To be honest I don't blame people for being put off by computer transports and music servers, firstly because not everyone is computer savvy, but also because in my opinion computer based hifi audio is only in it's infancy, it has quite a distance to go and lot of hurdles still to overcome.

For the HE-6 I think most people are not keen on buying an amplifier to power just one headphone, at least this is what put me off at first.  Then again the HD800 is no less specific in its requirements for an amplifier, as are STAX.

Simple problem to solve. Get rid of your other headphones.

Why so of the HD800s?

I meant in terms of needing special amping. 800 takes regular headamps unlike the others....but it tends to be so limited in acceptable ones so as to be nearly as seperate in needs as the others.

The LCD3 is reportedly pretty picky about amplification as well.

Has anyone tried the LCD3 on a high-end (in quality, not power) speaker amp, or on the Dark Star?  Would be interesting if they scale as well as the HE6s do.  I'd test it myself but I don't think anyone local has an LCD3.

I didn't like the LCD's (or the HD800 for that matter) at all out of the speaker amp that I greatly prefer with the HE6.

Reminder to myself: There's still a definite need for something like HD650 and a Lyr in my rig, not just a bit of personal nostalgia.  Headphones like HE-6 are best kept with good recordings.  Vintage recordings with marginal quality that are worth listening to no matter how bad the recording because the music is simply that good and that can not be replaced is best left for headphones that would bring out every flaw in the recording in excruciating detail.  Ray Charles' older recordings such as the 24/96 The Genius Sings the Blues (Atlantic) is vintage recordings from the 50's and 60's.  While it's been cleaned up as well as it can be, the recording quality is still pitiful at best.  That's simply how it was back then.  The music wants to be listened to, that music is fantastic and immortal.  But it does not want to be listened to on the HE-6

No. I love my Leben, but it does not have enough power from the headphone out to drive the HE-6, and it's not good for the output transformers to drive the HE-6 from the speaker taps.

Couldn't the use of the Direct Box or resistors protect the transformers?

preproman and I did run the LCD-2.2 off of the Emotiva amps (300w). They didn't need near the power of the 6s but IMO, sounded better on them than the B gear. The balance across the spectrum was more in line with the HE-6. The sparkle was there, the strike of the cymbal as well as the decay was noticeably better, they even had an expansive soundstage. Now to find what wattage is needed (not wasted) for the LCDs. IN THE LCD THREAD!
