HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone

I think the felt-mod (on the inside magnet) is the most important one here. I did that first: the treble is toned down and diffraction is lessened. However, treble is toned a bit too much down. Then I removed the fibres and foam from the outside of the driver. This opened the sound and increased the treble, but treble is less than HE-6 in stock condition. The sound is now clearly more holographic, open and transparent. In addition the tonality / frequency response is much closer to what I perceive as correct / optimal for allround genre/use. I also have the micro-suede / "vegan" pads from Audeze, but this "mod" is less significant than the above IIRC.

The only weakness I can find is the sub-bass. I hear a very obvious roll off under 30Hz (compared to LCD-2). In other words: When I listen to sine waves, I hear that 30Hz is about the same loudness as 40, 50, 60Hz and upward, but when I go to 25Hz and especially 20Hz, these frequencies are clearly lower than 30Hz. This difference is IMO not (only) beacuse the human ear is less sensitive below 30Hz.

I think this decrease is because the cup-driver assembly isn't airtight: This is (at least partly) what causes the SPL in the lowest of the low frequencies to be lessened. In contrast, the LCD-2 seal completely and have stellar sub-bass performance. You can feel the pressure / suction in the eardrum when you put on and take off these headphones and when you push or draw the cups while you wear them. This is not the case with HE-6, no matter what pads you put on, because the cup-driver construction isn't airtight. Well, all IMO.

If lack of sealing in the cup itself is the weakness of HE-6 and this could be modded, then I won't have to dream about other headphones ...

Depend how you attached the pads. I taped mine directly onto the cups while others insist on using the rings.

"modding" the headphones wouldn't give the same results for everyone, that should be a given since this is DIY and all...

When I taped the pads it made no (practical) difference because - as I said - the cups themselves aren't airtight.

This was my experience as well - I found no notable difference between taping and using the ring for attachment (which on my pair tightly fits the pad to the cup). This said, I did end up making an insert for the base of the vegan pads that made a notable difference for me in sub-bass and impact, though I'm rather hesitant to talk about my pad mods, given people's opinionated viewpoints on their own approach. There's certainly no need for an argument about this stuff.

This sounds intriguing. Could you please describe or even better post a picture or two showing this insert, please?

^Tell you what...I'll take some pictures later today and put together a post about what I've done with the pads, as it's a number of things. If anyone finds it of value, cool. If not, and folks feel it's a bunch of BS, that's fine too. No big deal, as I know everyone has different preferences/ideals in terms of presentation, and we're using different upstream gear.

A little HE-6 porn................

Multi-modded : open grill mod (and removed dust cover and cotton), Audeze leather pads, headband suspension system (from member Lohb), aftermarket (from Ted @Headphone Lounge) 25' long silver cable fed via XLR connection to speaker taps of my Pioneer Spec 1 preamp/Spec 2 amp system from 1979.  Truly thankful to the guys on this thread for all the ideas and blazing the path to the mods on this incredible headphone.

So speaker-like/holographic sound..............and the bass..............well, hard to describe but it's the best I've ever heard - visceral, clean, rumbly.  Better than TH900...........D7000............Pro900.............to give you a sample of my frame of reference.

If the HE-1000 is way better than this.............well, I just can't imagine that being possible.

Oregonian - Which pads do you use?
... now I see that you added text to the photos. Audeze leather pads. Thought so.

I think the HE-6 gang are the most intrigued and accepting of tweaks as there are on here. I grin when I read another convert amazed at the speaker like presentation off the speaker taps. To taps :beerchug:

Have any HE6 veterans compared the HE6 driven out of the Rag vs their favourite speaker amp?

I want to try that headband out.  Could you post the web site where to purchase one from?

Thanks....
