Here what HE6 needs:

120dB - 4467mW or 14.95Vrms
115dB - 1413mW or 8.41Vrms
110dB - 447mW or 4.73Vrms
105dB - 141mW or 2.65Vrms

I cant believe you are still debating about huge power as most important factor which has biggest impact on sound. Second part of Happy Camper sounds much better. you just need 5W very high quality amp with very good power supply. You better focus at this.

Actually that is HIGHLY debatable.  The published spec for the sensitivity of the HE-6 is just "83.5 dB" - that means NOTHING.  Zero.  Nada.  Because we don't know what that 83.5 dB is in reference to.  At what frequency?  And what power input?  What if that is the rated efficiency at 1W? Then your table is WAY off.

I have never seen anything definitive that makes that "83.5 dB Efficiency" spec have any meaning whatsoever.

Reminder: I own and love HE-6's

I do recall that someone managed to (intentionally) blow up an HE6 at a meet/show just to see if it was possible but I don't remember the details.

Ray did that at RMAF last year with his Dark Star.  If memory serves me Jude overnighted his personal pair so Ray could use them at the show but I think he gave Ray a stern warning not to do that to his pair.

115dB - 1413mW or 8.41Vrms

I can tell you after testing the he6 with the new gsx that this number is
very close to correct, measured with a recently calibrated bruel&kjaer
level meter. This level is louder than i wish to listen at.

You are correct Steve, that's exactly what happened.

That's good to know.

Indeed - it's nice to have some better information than we did.  Fang should really clarify the spec on his website.

I really enjoy my HE-6. I had them running off an old yamaha av receiver speaker post with banana plugs and they sounded good. I head they sounded good off the Gungnir/Mjolnir combo and so I ordered. Got them in today and they don't sound as good. Decided to sell my G/M and keep using my AV receiver for now.  Man I was looking forward to using them, but I love the headphones and they do need to be pushed.

For all our speaker amp enthusiasts, and general amplifier aficionados: the Absolute Sound's 2012 audio component guide is something to check out - http://www.theabsolutesound.com/buyers_guides/14/ (download the PDF)

They interview 9 of the industry's top designers with 4 of the same questions.  The questions touch on...why they work with the technology they work with (mostly tube vs. SS / class A, AB, etc.)  How far the industry has come in 10 years, where it's going, the convergence of tube & SS, neutrality, class D amplification, etc.  The homogeneity/diversity of the responses is interesting.

Some of those interviewed: Nelson Pass, Johnson of Conrad-Johnson, Rowland, Ohashi (a former Luxman chief engineer, now owns some other company), MBL guy, Mark Levinson guy, Bob Carver.

Here's an excerpt from the prev. Luxman designer:

We  chose  Class  A  transitioning  to  AB  because  it  offers  the
best of each technology. Class A improves low-level crossover
distortion  and  Class  AB  offers  vigorous  sound  quality  with
explosive dynamics. Guided first and foremost by sound quality
and  after  many  listening  trials  we  decided  on  the  optimal
“crossover”  point  for  the  handoff  between  Class  A  and  AB.
Interdependent variables include the size of the power supply, the
amount of current used in the output stage, and the type of output
devices. These all react dynamically with one another and must
be carefully designed in harmony and with ample headroom. The
larger size and heat dissipation characteristics of pure Class A
designs were considered negative factors in targeting a 500Wpc
amplifier.

In case anyone wants to see what 1500 watt all-Class A monoblocks would look like:

http://www.stereophile.com/content/boulders-3050-monoblocks

If the HE-6 is 83.5/mw into about 50 ohm, those monoblocks would give you about 240 watts into the HE-6.  =]

Another interesting quote, this time by Nelson Pass:

The last ten years have once again demonstrated that high-end  amplifiers  with  part-per-million  distortion  numbers  and
other superlative specifications are not very popular. It’s like
pure distilled water—it has no character and most people don’t
want to drink it.

If there has been progress, it has been where the subjective
character  has  been  refined  in  the  service  of  the  listener’s
experience.  To  paraphrase  McLuhan,  we  are  turning  our
mature technologies into art.

I think about 12.8w.

What was the differences? What was it you didn't like about the Mjolnir?

If it's a power issue, I could venture a guess: strident top end, loose bass, unrefined imaging for starters.

Just out of curiosity, how long did you engage the Gungnir/Mjolnir combo before deciding to sell? Am I reading this right - one listen and you marked it "Down-the-street?"
