I'm using a relatively inexpensive tripath amp (class D) from its speaker out to power my 6. I'm amazed that it sounds really good. One doesn't not need an expensive amp for the 6.
This is very interesting.. Have you heard HE-6 from any of the top-tier dedicated amps, like beta22 and others? If yes, how does the sound compare to the Tripath?

No, I don't have any of the top tier headphone amps. All I've been using before is an Audio Research D70 Mk. II (http://www.arcdb.ws/D70/D70.html) speaker amp.

I received yesterday a set of the Head-Direct leather earpads. They are a lot better made than the original velour pads that came with the HE-6. The ring on the back of the pads is totally different. It is made of a black more flexible plastic material than the transparent brittle material used on the original velour pads. Th epads are comfortable BUT I think they are a little in the thin side. They cna use being thiker so the ears do not touch the ouside face of the driver area and probably will also provide a little bigger soundstage.
One thing I noticed is that IMO the leather pads make the sound a little bit thin or less warm. In a very quick A/B comparison I think I like the sound with the velour pads better but it could be just matter of taste. I will make a more in depth comparison later.
Anyone with a pair of leather pads want to swap with a pair of original pads, I've a few pair. I'd like to audition the leathers before buying a pair. If the leather pads have an impact on the openness of the soundstage, I would stay with the velours.

I think they do. I think the soundstage with the velour pads is more open and the sound warmer. The leather pads are not that much money just $20 so it is not much to invest in a experiment. I am going to order a pair of the velour pads with the new design back rings as soon as they available. The design and implementation of the new rings is so much better.
musicman59 didn't say anything about "thicker / deeper" velour pads. Yes of course that is what I would want also "thicker / deeper" velour pads but at this point who knows what Fang will do.

No, he did not say anything about thicker or deeper velour pads nor I asked. I just asked about the better installation back ring.
The leather pads seems a little bit thinner and/or softer than the current velour pads. I hope the new velour pads are at least the same thickness and consistency of the current ones.. I can live with that but not thinker or softer.

I have never heard the combo with the HE6 and the Peachtree (out of the speaker taps). I just thought it was an excellent price and a versatile package.
I'm runing a Decco-2 -> HE-6 combo and am satisfied. I think it runs them as well as my Pioneer SA-8500 and the DAC is nice too. Also, it has a remote. More amps should have remotes.
