This is my current eq profile with the hifiman he-500 with grill mod. Not much EQ but I like the overall sound and wonder if it can get better. Please give me your input and current eq profiles that you are using.

My grill mod used to be what you have, last two years - bare.

Low Shelf 2 ----- 78 +2.6 db - 1.20 Q (LS 2 has a whiptail that is -db from 75-125 Hz)
Analog bell ---- 980 -2.0 db - 4.50 Q (need this one to get full benefit at 1840 Hz)
Analog bell -- 1840 +2.9 db - 3.40 Q (if you just have a single band, this is it)
Digital bell 2 - 4460 -2.7 db - 7.70 Q (next 3 settings chase some FR AND ringing)
Digital bell 2 - 6420 -2.4 db - 7.20 Q
Digital bell 2 - 9840 -3.0 db - 7.50 Q

Started with one of the big name EQ's, rejected bass under 100 hz settings, slowly started to figure out where the issues were on MY set. Later started with ringing issues - but again each unit is different. Quickest ways are to go with singers that have an edge in the voice and listen - Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, etc. When done they should have an edge, but same edge as your best speaker/can (or best you ever heard - plays it - or since you've heard them live, that's another help. So Joni shouldn't sound like Norah Jones, she should sound like Joni minus that metallic/cavern edge - totally - or mostly. Makes a huge difference in increasing enjoyment/no fatigue during long sessions.

Hope it helps.

Just tried this out and its much better! Only change for now is the 78 to 40hz. I feel like He-500 is already perfect in the bass. Only some sub bass low shelf and its pretty flat with rumble!

Is it OK to have 2 Low shelfs?

Filter: ON LS Fc 30 Hz Gain 2 dB Q .71
Filter: ON LS Fc 70 Hz Gain 1 dB Q 1.2
Filter: ON PK Fc 980 Hz Gain -2 dB Q 4.5

I do double EQ on the HEX v2. I do have a 10 band set up where I do that for the 500.

My mods explain my 78 Hz setting. I consider the 500 bass to be a bit sloppy ( Q too high ) so I use some dynamat to cut that. I also have no back screen.

LS 2 also curtailed bass in the 85-125 Hz area compared to LS, which I like, with just LS then 40 Hz. 30 is too late. With two LS settings I'd go 70 +1 and 38 +2. Get honest solid bass. I don't do fatuous, gargantuan bass.

Ooops. That EQ list was my current working copy. My reference copy is a bit different. The one I gave is a little too blunted piano, guitar, violin, voices and more - getting towards easy listening. No when it should should bright or sharp, that should be there.

Try:

LS 42 Hz 2.6 1.00
980 Hz -1.9 4.50
1840 2.9 3.40
4460 -2.4 7.60
6420 -2.0 7.90
9840 -2.8 7.10
