Hifiman Edition XS Launched

ah! I believed otherwise. You are absolutely right, this is the point: if I press with my fingers the bass quantity decrease.
I also have a Hifiman HE-R7DX, and those have almost no clamp at all; with the r7dx is the exact opposite, less clamp less bass. In that case you can raise the clamping force by bending the headband, did you try to do this on the XS?
HE-R7DX is closed back dynamic so they behave like that. XS open back planar with low resonance frequency so the more you create leakage the more you boost the bass but it shifts from bottom to mid/high bass area. It seems intentional that XS designed with the light clamp force so you have a little bit of leakage and boosted bass. With a better clamp, bass will be flatter although i didn't bend mine. Your face creates resistance to diaphragm. When your face/clamp out of equation, bass goes wild. Abyss 1266 have a similar design i think.

From Resolve's measurement of the resonance frequency it looks like the resonance is around 40hz on the edition XS which is relatively low, but if you'd like to remove that boost you can likely just EQ down the boost based on his measurement.

He shows the graphs at around 8:40, but also put it up on the forum: https://forum.headphones.com/t/hifiman-edition-xs/16492?u=resolve

sorry, this is my first planar, I didn't know...
that's clear, not a problem anyway, I can live with a sligthly elevated bass, it is a very light and natural boost anyway. Thank you for your explanations.

Just received my Edition XS. Overall I'm happy and I'm keeping them, a lot of strenghts and just one thing I don't altogether like, and I was not expecting this from graphs: a little too much bass and sub for me, not to a great extent, but it could almost be my perfect headphone with a lesser emphasis on bass. I have read lots of comments here, and almost no one seems to consider bass level (slightly) excessive, I'm suspecting that there could be some variation in FR between samples...
There is always some variation in samples. Use EQ or change the way you wear it.

If you are good with DIY, then I strongly suggest you try my cable, the only downside is that the cable will not be as soft and pliable as the softest cables out there.
You can get silicon rubber 0.8mm heat shrink from eBay, and also 0.6mm (0.5mm works too) pure silver wire from eBay too, both are cheap.
Plugs and jacks, again from eBay or Amazon.
Again, silver is not magic, just soft! copper, stainless steel, alu . . . . all sound the same, but much stiffer.
Can even artistically plat your cable!
I can't find any cheap silver cable on eBay...
How much is 'cheap' for such cable?

Pure silver or silver plate?

Pure silver or silver plate?
The one in link is pure silver.
It is not the metal used, I found out through experimentation that single solid wire worked best.
But single solid wire would make a stiff cable, hence the use of fully annealed pure silver wire for softness.

Not sure. The one which is good for headphones cable.
Also not sure about the gauge yet too - need to do more research.
22 is the largest guage I've seen due to one presumes is excess weight. 28 is the thinnest. DIY could be a wider range.

Which one is best? Theoretically the thickest, shortest, pure silver one - that would be lowest resistance.

Standard Philips.

and unfortunately im using builder service to make the cable, but well , why i use some reputable material for cable is purely for durability, even my 8-9 years old cable that i make for hd600 still in good condition, compare to just some $30-$40 that i bought from aftermarket seller that only last 2-3 years

Those bolts will not come off, nor you need to! at least to gain access to the internals.
The yoke bolts, are a combination of a barrel nut and a bolt. At production, Hifiman puts resin (superglue) on the threads to lock them up, to stop them from loosening during use. This means, if you try to force them, they just snap!
To gain access to the drivers and inside, remove the pads gently (they can snap) and remove the Philips screws. then very very gently, proceed further. The drivers can be very fragile.

Hey guys,

I'll be getting my Edition XS this coming weekend. I've been doing a whole lot of reading on different forums and I know that power requirements is a topic that has been extensively discussed; however, I haven't found much info on how these headphones do with a portable DAP such as de Sony WM1A, which I currently own.

Do any of you have experience in pairing the Edition XS with the WM1A and if yes, could you tell me what I can expect? I'll also be pairing them with a Schiit Asgard 3 and a Magni heresy, which I expect to have no problem driving the HPs.

Any info you can share will be highly appreciated!

edit: spelling

The wm1a pushes 260mw @ 16 ohms balanced and 60 mw on single ended, if you want to use them w this dap I recommend using the 4.4 connection.
