Dont care about those ear-mobs and they already tried a few times so nothing new
Here's my hex ($1800) vs. He400i ($400) comparison :
same box
same headband
same plastic gymbals
same metal used for cups
same connectors & overly stiff cables (he400i only comes with the short one)
same drivers. Admitedly this one is only an assumption based on hfman's statement that (approx): "hex is not using the nano driver but a tweaked older one". Afaik the only 'older one' is the one used in the 400 & 560 models. Any clarification from hfman here would be highly welcome!
Now I'm just very curious if the hex & he400i also sound similar .. or even same. Many thx in advance if you can do a quick SQ compare. It shouldnt be very hard since you did a 560 comparison and those two sound veeery similar (imho, the 560 is largely a 400i with wood cups & box)
wow, that surely is a lot of assuming going on in this list of comparisons.
The box... is... a box. nothing to do with the headphones.
the headband is sythetic leather with a nice stitch. Proven to be reliable and durable in previous models. very ideal for a headphone they plan to market as a potential mobile use headphone. The HEK's headband is heavier, yet with the holes it breathes well at least.
The plastic gimbals are ideal when saving weight. The HEK was all metal and ended it being a heavy headphone. Who cares? well, I happen to have a neck condition and the less weight on my head, the better. Audezes have never been an option for me since they are insanely over weight. I admit the gimbals suck, as I returned my HEX to get a new pair as the gimbal was faulty on the left ear, it would push in all the way. Hifiman's customer service was excellent and had no issue with fighting to get a new pair. I know the HE560's had lots of little issues but hifiman stands behind their products. No worries. Every company has issues, it's how their customer service is that matters to me.
The metal for the cups? I assume you mean the black chrome. That's directly correlated to the 400i being the cost efficient option vs the HE560...similar headphones, but not. Save some money, avoid wood cups and highly refined driver. Get the black chromed version, less ideal driver and save money with the 400i. Good marketing and a way to distinguish tiers of their headphones. 400i and 560 is the same goes for HEX and HEK or how they wanted to market the headphones. I actually like the black chrome look. It's sleek! The HEK is a bit gaudy looking, albeit I don't mind having one at home for use as I don't care what anyone thinks of me when I wear them. But they are flashy in comparison to the HEX.
I've owned the 560's and am very familiar with them. I don't think they sound anything like the HEK or HEX.
The drivers in the HEX are much larger than the 400 or 560.
I agree it's stiff. It also creates a poor sonic signature in my opinion. Cable believers or not, try a draug2 and you will hear more than a subtle difference, but a significant improvement with many headphones.
the cable used in the 560, HEX and HEK are the same type...crystalline. Sadly, this cable is crap. The ends of the braided cloth material starts to fray at the 2.5mm base. Warranty claimed on a new pair! Either way, I replace my cables with Norne Audio cables - always. I've tried many other companies like moon audio, forza, whiplash, artemis, lavricables and a few others. All my gear is typically Norne audio for headphones, or DHC, and different brands for power cables, digital cables, etc, SR, DHlabs,Siltech,PSaudio,Pangea etc. No cable has ever actually impressed me other than Norne cables with headphones specifically. Honestly, otherwise, cables are a waste of money if you expect large gains. They are money well spent if you know what you're doing and how to pair things well.
Drivers - you admit you are assuming. I need to say nothing.
The HE560's always made an insane claim of being able to be powered by a smart phone. If what they mean was it will make noise when you plug it in...sure. It can be powered by a smart phone. The quality of the sound was unacceptable, absolutely garbage in fact. I tried so many different amps before I found an amp that could do the 560's justice. They are NOT efficient in the slightest. In fact, I almost send them back on warranty because they were so picky about amps. The specs they advertise I swear were just guestimates. Each pair varies quite a bit imho. I've heard 3 different pairs and they all sound significantly different, as they were compared all on the same system and enviroment. just different cables, and my pair had a grille mod. The stock crystalline cable is garbage in my opinion. I won't get into that now. The HEX can be powered by the Iphone6, and I have...albeit it's "good" and it's not that it doesn't get loud enough. It's just that it doesn't sound fast enough and clean enough. I ended up ordering a Mojo and was waiting a little while for it before it shipped. just the other day I decided to cancel the order as I hear too many mixed reviews on it. I will be listening to one soon as I'll have one on loan. I don't expect to be blown away to be quite honest. But I have ultra high expectations of this Mojo. The HEX scales well imho. It's efficient in the way the HE560's are, yet clearly much more efficient than the HE560. Yet I mean the HEX is like the HE560 in the way that it's picky about sounding it's best on the right amp. Most things are capable of making it sound good. But not with a black background. Sadly I had my fears the HEX would be like other overly sensitive cans. they dont' pair well with certain higher powered amps as a subtle hiss or power buzz can be heard when the volumes are higher. mainly due to a poor amplifier design. The HEX is ultra sensitive like many IEM's. It can pick up this hum, hiss or whatever you want to call it...grey background? But with a super clean source of power, and high end amp...no trace of this hiss or hum will be present.
