the he4 is a beast

best price to performance headphone.

Yea I know :/ I'm having a hard time finding an upgrade to it >.> upgrading the DT 880 was easy [HE 4] upgrading the HE 4 not so much, as I don't have the cash lying around for an amp with enough head room for the HE 6

I'm so glad you and Grizzly are here standing by your beliefs.
Where on Earth are people hearing this magical HE-X with gobs of details and a black background?
Certainly wasn't evident in my pair.

Depends on the amp. Ak240 has a black background. My desktop zana duex amps is not as black as ak240. Portable amps like pico slim is completely black back ground. Every amps has a noise floor, depends on how we pair.

Maybe there was something wrong with your pair. The loaners I had for two weeks dont sound like the same phones you were listening (eg. Detailed and black background). There have been prior inconsistencies like this. It may not be that we all hear differently at all. Is this the result of unit to unit diffences?

IMHO they are what they are. Many have liked them. I found them very comfortable and they drew me to come back and listen to more.  They are an enjoyable set of cans to kick back with.  That's the good part -- for some at least.

On the downside, a lot of people have said they aren't paying $1799 for them.  Construction quality and quality control have been questioned. Others have found what's in the box to be sparse at best for this price level.  Finally, some have asked if they are as good as several excellent flagships that cost less or the same (HD800, TH900, Ether, various Audeze models).

I liked 'em but I'm not buying them just yet, if ever.  Only time will tell if HiFiMan got this right.  They have certainly done some things right, others not so much.  At the end of the day you can't please all of the people all of the time.   We all hear differently, have different preferences and tastes, and divergent ideas about price and value.  A truly great game changer transcends many of these differences.  Time will tell if HEX has broad and lasting appeal.  For some it may.  For others it appears it may not.

As someone interested in buying an HEX, do you guys have a suggestion on a reputable place to purchase one while also saving money? A friend suggested Razordog Audio for about $1550 new, and #1350 open box. Are there better deals than that elsewhere?

For sure we all hear things different, and we all have our own preferences. Its just with these, I seem to be hearing an entirely different (better) headphone to some!

I think you're hearing the same thing many of us also heard.
Don't worry, some people are going to be adamant that the HE-X is the best thing since sliced bread.

I doubt there's driver discrepancies for production models vs. loaner models.
That would be quite a blunder.

I have not heard the HEX and don’t know how Dr Fang et al reasons. But like B-60 I believe Hifiman plan was to offer a headphone that sounded as good as they could make it while it been used with a portable music player. In Asia portable solutions seems to be the standard for driving headphones. The people that uses higher end headphones normally use something better than a cellphone or at least a cellphone together with a portable amp, if I have understand it correct. With a portable dac/amp maybe it’s better with a headphone that has a slightly roll of treble and a more forgiving nature than for example a HEK.

Yeah, I just started getting on this thread, as I'm on the tour. Lots of very strong opinions so far, with some seeming to confuse blunt statements with nuanced discussion. I am looking forward to hearing these on my various amps.

I have to admit that I'm curious about some of the decisions HFM made regarding these, and I'm not at all sure that these are what I'm looking for. But there's only one way to tell...
