So if you think the HEK sounds that bad, why would you think a trickle down version at half the price would come close to the HE-6?  Seems like you're pretty happy with the HE-6, based on the comment above.  What would it take to be an "HE-6 killer" if nothing on the market comes even close?

It seems to me that in the latest trend of some headphones and "high-end" gear, it is all supposed to sound as inoffensive/polite/relaxed as possible, while simulating an illusion of refinement, whatever that means, that warrants a higher price. Yes I am talking about the HEK, but also gear like Moon430HA and Schiit Ragnarok. My problem with this is that real music doesn't sound limp/dead/relaxed/polished/smooth etc. And no it doesn't commend a higher price. This is the way back to mid-fi actually imho.

In this strange way, could "lesser stuff" from a product hierarchy, like the HE-X, actually end up sounding more correct? I can hope and would not mind. The LCD-X arguably did a few things better than the LCD-3c. But then again this is why I called it wishful thinking and realistically not much of a chance for it.

For all I care HFM should bring back the old magnets (symmetrical ones, if the new ones can't pull it off), gold traces driver etc. Even take the HE-6s and tune/polish them some, as out of the factory gates they are not exactly a finished work of art (in both SQ and BQ). There's a reason people mod them. There's plenty they could have been done to tune the HE-6s and put a 2k price on them. These days there are even headamps that can drive them. :)

Or going electrostatic with new Jades. That would be exciting.

P.S. : There are things in the market the play the same league, just not necessarily overall better. This list includes modded HD800s, Abyss, SR-009s, SR-007 MKI (on the right amp) and a very few others. Most of these I have owned, so I know them well, including the ones I don't think play the same league.

There are things that play in the same league (or above, depending on who you ask). modded HD-800, SR-009, Abyss are a few names that come to mind.

The H1k has been a disappointment among the "HE-6 crew", because it fails at conveying the energy in the music the way the good ol' HE-6 does.

While Audeze headphones might appeal to a certain crowd (with strong neck), the sound variability makes it very hard to say how any LCD headphone actually sound like (beside being of the darker variety).

I'm not even gonna consider the HE-6 for comfort reasons alone. If they do make a new version of the HE-6 with better comfort I will take a look though

I'm curious though, what changes comes with a modded HD800?

If I’m not mistaking Fang tuned the HEK to sound more like the Orpheus then the SR009. I have not personally heard any of them, but reports I have read has said that the Orpheus is comparatively warmer and smoother and the SR 009 is more energetic sounding.

The size of the driver can maybe play a part as well. The down side of using only ONE big drive is that the lower the bass goes the more it will disturb the other registers. In speakers they often use very small and fast drivers for heights and medium big drivers for the mids and upper bass and bigger ones for sub bass. To keep the mids and bass separated is more important the lower the bass goes because the movement of the driver is increasing exponentially to the frequency. So not equally important for a bookshelf speakers that roll of at 45 Hz as for a floor standing that goes down to 20 Hz.

HE-6 is very comfy if u just bend the headband correctly.
I found them not much better then Audeze at first, but then I took the time to bend it proporly, and now I can wear them for hours.
And the suede audeze pads make them so comfy around the ear aswell

And with Lohb's suspension headband mod, comfort is pretty good on the HE-6..................along with Audeze pads.

Stillhart, has that $1799.00 been confirmed? Just curious

Early on, they were cagey about the pricing.  By the end of the weekend, they were saying $1799.  Summer also posted that number on Facebook in the post about the Edition X in the Head-fi group.
