Hi all,
I just bought an HEX V2, my goal is now to find out a DAC/amp to combine with the HP.
I read hundreds of posts, but I still didn't find the proper answer to what I am looking for. I need a DAc with optical in, and an amp wiht analog in (cd player+turntable).
I know that with the HEX I don't need so much power, and that's exaclty my concern. Indeed reading the qoute of Dr. fang “Don’t use amps with more than 1W to drive them or else they will distort. I’ve seen people use EF6 to drive them which is silly…” makes me worring that the Magni 2 uber could provide too much power to the HP (Maximum Power, 32 ohms: 1.5W RMS per channel
).
The output impendence looks good for a planar magnetic, and also in combi with the dac has a total price which is reasonable.
do you think the amp provides too much power to drive the HP?
In case do you have something else to suggest? f.i. Aune X1s?
Thanks!
I have HEX V2's and HEK on the way. I run a Woo WA 5 LE And a Violectric V281 to drive the HEX's. I adjust amps for low gain and away we go . They both have very powerful output and both work beautifully.

thanks for the reply, I had a look at the specs of your two amps, the power output is way higher than the Magni 2. So you for your experience you mean that the quote for the company about the 1W amp tops is overstate?

What's the main sound differences between the two amps?

Both amps have a very different presentations. Both are powerful and have excellent bass. The V281 outshines the Woo in terms of detail. There are layers of music that are revealed with the V281, it's very analytical and not necessarily fatiguing. However the presentation of the Woo is what I always return tio. The Woo is more enjoyable to listen to. You get great bass and a wonderful midrange but the treble misses some detail. It's difficult to explain but I still chose the Woo over the Violectric. To address the amps characteristics. I use Lavricables Silver XLR for the Woo and I use Moon Audio Black Dragon XLR for the Violectric the copper tames the Solid State amps presentation.

You never run the amps at full volume anyway. The amps have user adjustable settings for gain. The Woo has a high/low switch on the front. The violectric V281 has dip switches on the back. Both have a lot of options to enable using high or low impedance headphones a straightforward exercise. This configuration ability doesn't lock you into one type of headphone.

I see, but unfortunately the magni 2 has only Low and High gain swith on the back; not so many other option to configure, that was also a reason why I am a bit worried to purchase this amp to combine with the HEX.

I wouldn't worry too much about power. I'm using a Deckard, that has 4w of power, and no distortion. To this HP distort, you would probably go deaf before that happens.

I see, thanks also for your feedback, good to know for the future. In the end I've opted for a JDS Objective2 custom, going for a low power amp. If I won't be satisfied I will look for more powerful options.

Anyone using the Fiio X5 iii to drive the HEX? I just got the Fiio DAP in. Works great with DT250 and SM64 but I don't think the Fiio synergises well with the HEX. Mojo with HEX yields much better results IMO.

I actually have the X5 III, the HEXs V2 and the SM64s... IMHO, they do a great pairing. Not needing to have a balanced cable through my Hifimans. You can clearly distinguish each instrument being played and be able to follow them separately if desired. Not had enough time yet to comment on the Earsonics (which I love their sound signature).

Cheers.

Agree re SM64. No desire to hear any other IEM

I just picked up an iFI ICAN SE that puts out 4W into 16ohm. Into 50ohm, it puts out 1.28W.

Your Deckard isn't putting 4W into your 50ohm HEX. It's rated at 4W into 20ohm so if my understanding is correct at 50ohm it'd be roughly 1.6W.

Are most people here putting more than 1W into their HEX?

I wouldn't want to be damaging the diaphragm without realising it

More than 1 watt won't hurt anything. I run mine off my Violectric V281 all the time. It's putting out more power than most amps and there are no issues with it.

Edit: I just checked. The Violectric is putting out 4.2 watts at 50 ohms. No issues whatsoever. Just don't turn it up to insane volumes and all will be fine.

Thanks for your email ChaseM. Fang mentioned that anything >1W would cause distortion. Presumably, you haven't noticed any?
