Hi capacity DAP with drag and drop?

I picked up a 120GB Zune and a 120GB Ipod yesterday and I don't like either of them. I really can't stand the software for either of them. I prefer to do all of my own rips and just drag and drop like I did with my old DAP. I am going to take them back to the store in a few hours and when I get back I will hopefully be placing my order for a new DAP online. I would like to get around 120GB, drag and drop, with good SQ. I don't need video, games, etc. AM/FM would be nice but not needed.

With that said, is there anything out there that suits my needs? I have been looking around and can't seem to find anything that fits my needs. Any help would be much appreciated.

I think the highest drag and drop DAP available is the 32GB Cowon S9. I could be wrong. But you could always get a 16GB Cowon D2 with the SD card expansion slot and have unlimited space with SD cards.

I was really hopping that there was a HDD DAP that was drag and drop. It seems like everything is moving to flash now and none of them have enough space for my needs. I don't think I would be willing to carry around a bunch of little SD cards with me everywhere either.

Not counting the larger Archos PMP, the only two 120GB DAP's in the retail market are the iPod and the Zune.

However, you have a few DIY options that fit your criteria. First, you could get an 80GB iPod 5.5G, Rockbox it, and then mod it to 120GB if you want. Second, you could buy an old iRiver or Gigabeat, and mod them to take a 120GB drive.

EDIT: I took the Gigabeat route. About $50 for an F40 on eBay (you need an F40 for the larger backplate), ~$120 for the 120GB drive (although you could find it cheaper on eBay), and less than $10 for the drive converter board, which you'd need to use a ZIF drive in a Gigabeat F.

I was worried that I might end up needing to mod something to get what I wanted. I really wanted to get an extended warranty on this one because I will be working with it and things tend to get messed up at the job sites. Buying new, what is the biggest drag and drop available right now?

If you are looking to get an extended warranty (like a Best Buy), your options will be extremely limited, I think.

A suggestion: If you expect it to be getting a lot of abuse, you might want to consider a flash-based player. I don't think the Cowon D2 is the best idea because of the big screen, but the Sansa Clip can take a lot of abuse (and they have an 8GB player available).

What is the need for 120GB? FLAC? Or just the desire to carry your entire collection with you?

I like to have most of my music with me at all times. I have a wide spread in what I listen too and what others at work like to listen too as well. I also simply don't have time to go through and change it around every week either. I like to set it up once and be done till I need to add more music.

I can order online and get an extended warranty from most places and there isn't a rush to get it. I just wanted to order today before I head out on the road tomorrow. I wont get a chance to sit down in front of my computer for abut a week or so.

If you're going DIY? You can go w/ an Upgrade 5/5.5 G ipod/IMOD with a 240GB Hard drive from rapidrepair. Just use Rockbox for the Drag-and-Drop capability. That's the biggest I can think of that can be bought assembled DIY. =)

Just to add if you're not that fuzzy with carry or storing songs in multiple locations. You can Gofor a Sansa Fuze the buy extra 32GD MicroSds. But the price might be a bum the only factor is both the fuze and the cards will have warranty. On a Side note I saw a 64GB Micro sd on sale last PC Show here locally. But they're really $$xpensive. But they did knock 32 GB card prices down a bit.

Try a different angle - If it is the just the software you hate and not the players themselves- why not try some 3rd party software to manage your songs? I too hated Itunes and now use Media Monkey to manage my music on a 60Gb Ipod Video. There's not many alternatives that support the 6th Gen classic, but how about this one - it is drag and drop (see features tab):

I have no experience of the Zune, but there's bound to be something out there for that too. If it is not too late, try different software with both players - and keep the one you like the best. This way you get to keep a new player with warranty.

So this one does in fact support the 6th gen? If so, I will go back out and pick up another one now! I can't seem to find if it supports 6th gen on the site. Please reply soon and I will run out and grab one tonight. Thanks!

Late to respond, so I guess you'll see this in a week.... I don't have any experience with the 6G Classic. But, as for the Zune -- the current Zune 3.1 software does not support syncing outside of the Zune Software (older firmware had allowed syncing via Media Monkey, via third party tools).

Thanks for all the help everyone! I was able to get foobar2000 to work with a 6g 120gb Ipod with the help of a plugin I found. It
kept my folder structure the same and everything so I am very happy with it now. Thanks again!

Hi, I hate to butt in since it looks like this thread is done with, but I have a Gigabeat F40 that I have to put a new battery in anyway, where can I find a 120gb drive for this? Ebay isn't turning up much, but I might be looking for the wrong words. Thanks for any ideas.
