I don't think you get the confirmation until they physically send it out the door.

I can't wait until my pair comes in. Hopefully I'll get them in 2 weeks.

15% of that is £44, and a handling charge will take that to around £50.

Yeah, but it's still a kick in the teeth when you forget you may have to pay it !!!

yep, there is a waiting list in case anyone cancels last minute, but otherwise I think Todd said they were a few days back.

Exactly, it's still a bitter pill to swallow when that invoice lands on your doorstep. Those $430 headphone have just become $510 cans

There is a 4.5% import duty on headphones as well, on top of 15% VAT and the courier's inspection fee, I'm in the same boat.

I confirmed my order after the lettering debacle but I haven't heard anything yet, hope my pair don't get forgotten about.

IIRC the last time i had something nabbed at customs (my Mapletree amp) the handling charge was 13 quid. Fiddling with the numbers, it looks like you might only be charged VAT on the total value less £18 (the threshold for VAT/import duty).

So, $429/1.6 = £268.12. Less £18 is £250.12. VAT on that comes to 37.51, plus the £13 handling and you get £50.51, which is pretty close and allows a little discrepancy in the exhange rate.

customs is an evil empire ;(

a few years ago, I sent a birthday present to my GF (in germany) and it was VERY clearly a present, sent from my home address, WITH a signed card inside and all that.

she gets a notice in the mail saying she has to show what the value of the item is (it was TRULY a gift, though) and they would not release it to her unless she paid something close to that (I know it was well over $30 in fees).

if the item came from a business and had a receipt inside, fine, charge customs fees. but they made her do a net.search and create an invoice for them to bill her against!

next time, I won't send any boxes (product box and packing) since customs thinks 'new box = customs fee'. kind of kills the whole idea of giving a gift if you have to remove the thing from its box and ship it 'bare' ;(
