Hi everyone
I'm new to the forum and looking for some advice on putting together a headphone rig. I've put together $2500 so far between selling off some vintage gear on CL and a couple of winning trips to the local casino over the holidays. Still have a few things for sale so that number might go up a bit. I tend to put everything back into the hobby.
I primarily listen to classic and prog rock i.e. Rush, Genesis, Yes, Porcupine Tree, etc.
I'm looking for a Tube amp that has that classic look to it. I really like the Woo Audio stuff, a set of closed ear headphones and a SS DAC. I currently have a pair of Denon AH-D2000 and Sony MDR-V6s from the 80s and a Emotiva XDA-1 DAC that I could use in the interim as I build to my ultimate goal. I don't need to worry about sonld leaking out, but I tend to like the sound isolation that closed ear provides.
In the short term my only source will be my Mac via an Apple TV so the DAC will have to support TOSLINK. At some point I may add a vintage turntable I have. If I replace my 2010 Mac Mini in the future I move it to the rig and take the ATV out of the path.
From the reading I've done it certainly seems that Woo Audio is highly regarded and I really like WA5-LE, but that would blow my whole budget without any room for amp upgrades so that may have to wait for upgraditis to set in. I also like the Beyerdynamic Tesla T5P but that would limit my budget on the amp and I'm not sure if that is the way to go right away.
So I'm leaning towards a WA6-SE with the upgraded tubes and possibly a Schiit Bitforst, although the aesthetics of the Bitfrost doesn't really fit in with the Woo. The look to me has some importance as well as the performance. I'm envisioning a listening station in the corner of the bedroom with a vintage plycraft chair and a custom table that I'll build to fit the components. My own little oasis to sit and have a glass of scotch and listen to some great sounds.
All opinions are welcome as it's a learning process for me.
