Hi guys!

I've had the chance to test Byeyerdynamic dt 770 phones
and I liked them very much.
Now, what keeps bugging me is that I can't test the
other two models I could very well afford: dt 880 and dt 990.
Can you, the Beyerdynamic fans, prefer some other model
from Beyerdynamic over dt 770? Thanks!

If I transformed myself into Consumer Reports - I'd rate their Manufaktur dt990/600 a "best Buy". The is coming from a Beyerhead who has dt880/600, dt990/600, and have had 4 Darthbeyers, and just bought a pair of x-deep Darthbeyer.............BUT, you'll need a pretty good SS amp to run them properly. I've been using a Meier Prehead MkII.
If you do decide to go with dt770 - pls, pls, stick the 2003 80 ohm version in case you eventually decide to have them Darthed....particularly since it remains the best-balanced of all their models (the current 32ohm versions' treble may be bright for some listeners).
Ultimately you have to listen for yourself and decide what makes YOU happiest.

Pls be more specific - by what standard or measure?

I think he means that the 770s have the biggest bass of just about any headphone. This is likely the result of it's closed design (as opposed to the 880s and 990s, which are open) I own the 990s and have heard the 880s and 770s. IMO, the 770s are what you want if you (a) need some isolation; and/or (b) need skull crushing bass. IMO, both the 880s and 990s are significantly more "refined" (greater detail, greater instrument separation, wider and deeper soundstage) than the 770s. The 880s are a little more neutral than the 990s, and a lot of people prefer that sound. A lot of people like the more "fun" sound of the 990s (greater emphasis on the low and high ends).

Beyer owners with more experience should chime in.

As an owner of DT770/80s and DT990/250s, I have to say that I prefer the sound of the DT770 the most, though I must admit I've yet to burn in the DT990s well enough to my liking. The bass is less clear for the 770s, but when it comes to durability in the outdoors and pounding that bass, none comes higher.

I have had the dt770/80's and now have the dt880'250'05. First, both headphones are really good, but the dt880 is a lot more high-end. It produces more details, cleaner bass that extends further(imo), better mids, and overall a more natural sound. It also has less clamping force, making the dt880 more comfy than the dt770. Where the former phone falls short of the latter, is bass impact and weight; but what the dt880 provides in return is bass that sounds so detailed that that alone makes up for the shortcomings.

Good luck!

Allright, thanks for the replies!
I'll propably go for the dt 770/80ohm
since they're better outdoors, they have nice bass (afterall I listen to trance/techno) and
I'm sure they'll fit my head.

But I have one more question:
Are portable amps able to run 250ohm headphones as good as
80 ohm phones?
Minibox-d (Head-Direct.com) for an example.
Also, can you recommend some portable amps for the Beyerdynamic series, within the price range of +-100?

i love the dt770 - i think it is the most versatile of all beyers as you can wear outside as well since it is closed and still get good sound from lower volumes. my favourite however is the dt880 but then i have not heard the dt990 newer phones. they are all good. my dt770 are the 2002 version with 80ohm - great phones for the money but perhaps a bit more of a flat sound but with very strong bass.
