Help me find something that sounds kinda, sorta, but not really like a Senn HD 650 for around $100

From what I know of the HD650, it will sound pretty bad with an unamped ipod. Grados, however, will not.

The HD650 sounds fantastic out of an iPod.

Trying it right now. Amoré by Santana doesn't sound bad but the volume has to be at 100%. But there is quite a difference in sound quality between the iPod and when I plug it into the dac and amp.

Sorry to disillusion you or your friend, but:
1. Senn HD 650's are NOT closed phones- they are open.
2. Senn HD 650's MUST have a dedicated amp to power them properly
3. You'd be lucky to find used Senn 650's for $200, definitely NOT for $100
On another note - what about the Denon AH-D1001 - good closed cans under $100

Sorry for the confusion with the title. I'm not REALLY looking for an hd650 for $100--it would be nearly impossible. I'm just looking for something which has a similar sound signature; it doesn't have to have the tonal accuracy, soundstage, instrument separation, etc. of the hd650 nor the D2000. The main purpose of letting him try them was for me to get a gauge on exactly what kind of sound he wanted rather than whether or not he wanted a 650 or d2000 exactly. In addition, he knows that is not going to get anything close to the 650 or d2000 for only $100.

Thanks for the suggestions for closed phones so far; i'm leaning towards something in the senn line since that would be the easiest way to get something similar to the (laid back? veiled?) senn sound that he seems to like, but I was really hoping to branch out a bit and consider all companies/brands.

I edited the title to better relay what was said in my first post.

Sennheiser HD650 for 100 USD? Well you can get 2 Senn replacement HD600 drive units for 110 USD. Fashion a crude cable, tape the ends closed, tape some cotton around the rims, and hold the two drive units to your ears. They'd be easy to pack and transport too!

... but then again the HD600 sounds nothing like the HD650.

Why not just tell him to get a HD555? That seems like the logical choice.

thats a useful answer ..hd555 has the similar laid back style and runs good with ipod. and its usd 100

I have the HD650 and the DT770 and I have to say they sound pretty different. I don't think it would be a good choice if he liked the HD650's sound. Also, they'll probably run you more than $100

Which version ipod? I needed well under 50% with my shuffle, but I try to keep my listening under 75 dB (average).

How about a pair of Koss A250 phones? I own a pair and love them. They are very detailed with an emphasis on treble, and are often compared to high-end Senn's. Finally they sell for around $100 on the forums....

I think Kramer once said he preferred them to his HD580's, and he's quite a respected member around here

They do have an interesting sound, but it is nothing like an HD650 - they are quite bass lean.

the grado suggestion wont work, since they are very forward. the hd280's might be worth a look though.

Weak midbass, and some funky treble forwardness - not really the HD650 sound at all.

I know you meant this as a joke... But thats interesting, has anyone here ever bought drive units and tried to mod them into another headphone casing or make one altogether?
