Help me find something that sounds kinda, sorta, but not really like a Senn HD 650 for around $100

A friend of mine is taking his first baby steps into the world of hifi and is looking for closed headphones around $100. I let him listen to my HD650 and markl'ed D2000 out of his ipod (an underpowered source but also the source that he is going to primarily use) and he decided, across the board, that he liked the 650 better. He said he liked the D2000 but that he really enjoyed the laid back presentation of the 650. Aside from Sennheiser's closed headphones, what other options should he be looking at? I was thinking about the Beyer Dt770 - good idea or no?

He wants:
Closed, Full Size
Laid back/veiled/whatever 650 type sound

He has:
$100 (prob willing to spend a bit more if needed)
An unamped ipod as a source

Thanks for any and all help.

doubt you will find a 650 for 100, maybe just over 200 used. Maybe a used 580.

The bang-for-buck decreases when you moved closed, so although I know you're not asking for a perfect match with the HD650s, I'd really downplay the expectations. In nearly all respects.

The only full-sized, closed phones I've heard that reminded me of any Senn characteristics was the Ultrasone 780. Course that's not $100 bucks. I don't associate the DT770 at all.

DT-250. 80 ohm is cheaper but some pairs have more bass than they need to (though still not anywhere near dt770 bass), so you might want to audition them first. I now like the 250 ohm a bit better, but it costs around ~20 more, depending on where you get it, and the 80 ohm is already $169 or so, which is probably a stretch.

Of course, even something like the DT250 can't beat a real HD650, but it is passable when you need the isolation.

Agreed. And you're not going to find them for that price anyway.

Maybe the HD280. Tell him that he just can't have it all for $100. Either that or upgrade to the HD800 and give him a killer deal (for $100) on your HD650.

That would certainly be a hell of a lot closer in tonal balance than the SR80.
