Help flashing AV-710 to prodigy

I have downloaded the thing from here
Thing

It has two folders after extracted.
Eeprw
Eeprwa

Whcih do I use? They both have text documents.

On the DOS mode, you run the EEPROM Read/Write. For example,

After running the EEPROM Read/Write program, there are 9 options
user can select. Those options are shown as following:

[1] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + AK4586 with 24.576 MHz crystal
[2] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + VT1616 with 24.576 MHz crystal
[3] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + AK4586 with 49.152 MHz crystal
[4] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + VT1616 with 49.152 MHz crystal
[5] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + WM8716 with 49.152 MHz crystal
[6] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + AK4586+AK4380 with 49.152 MHz crystal
[7] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + VT1616+WM8728 with 24.576 MHz crystal
[8] Write To EEPROM for 1724HT + VT1616+WM8728 with 49.152 MHz crystal
[9] Read From EEPROM

You MUST select the one according to which kind of sound card you get.
The 1st option is suitable for 1724PC(Envy24HT+VT1616) with 24.576 MHz crystal.
The 2nd option is suitable for 1724CE(Envy24HT+AK4586) with 24.576 MHz crystal.
The 3rd option is suitable for 1724PC(Envy24HT+VT1616) with 49.152 MHz crystal.
The 4th option is suitable for 1724CE(Envy24HT+AK4586) with 49.152 MHz crystal.
The 5th option is suitable for Onkyo sound card (Envy24HT+WM8716) with 49.152 MHz crystal.
The 6th option is suitable for VPSD 8CH(Envy24HT+AK4586+AK4380) with 49.152 MHz crystal.
The 7th option is suitable for 1724PT 8CH(Envy24HT+VT1616+WM8728) with 24.576 MHz crystal.

Which program do I use? How exactly do I use them? What does it mean by finish Eeprom.ini? Which one of these

well, which part of readme is not clear ?
You have to copy 2 files "eeprwa.exe" and "eeprom_prodigy71.ini" from eeprwa folder anywhere else/new folder ("C:\eeprwa\ " for example). Then in the new folder rename eeprom_prodigy71.ini to eeprom.ini - this file will be used for flash.

boot to pure dos (boot from floppydisk)

go to the created folder ("C:\eeprwa\ " for example) and run eeprwa.exe

reboot to windows and install prodigy drivers.

first you should backup your original chaintech eeprom with eeprw with option 9 ([9] Read From EEPROM)

No I am still confused. Also I guess I will have to burn it onto a DVD or CD because who still has a floppy drive? I read your instructions and they sound simple. Then I look at the give instructions and I get confused.

What is this supposted to mean?

Do I burn all of them in one folder on a CD? Where do I get the prodigy drivers?

Also does it work on 64 bit linux when flashed? I am going to use the 64 bit version of SuSE. When I flash it will it work under linux with prodigy drivers?
Where can I get prodigy drivers, Linux and windows?

I would suggest to get a floppy drive first, since there'll be some renaming going on which obviously won't work on a write-protected medium. Otherwise you'd need to replace the eeprom.ini with the one for the card you intend to flash to prior to burning the stuff onto a CD. That would need to be a *bootable* CD, so at that point you'd probably need a floppy drive anyway.

What the two flashers do:
EEPRW will write the Envy24xT EEPROM contents defined in eeprom.ini.

EEPRWA can read and write the EEPROM contents, but for writing it only supports a fixed pre-defined set for cards with certain codec/DAC and master clock combinations (the 1..8 options). It's useful for making a backup of the present EEPROM contents, and should you not have a matching eeprom.ini for the AV-710, option 7 should match this card in case you want to flash back.

Prodigy 7.1 Windows drivers can obviously be found at the manufacturer's website. As for Linux, both ALSA and OSS should swallow the card in a current Linux distro.

OK, once more. If you don't want to backup your original chaintech eeprom, then you don't need eeprw at all. Lets focus on eeprwa only.
"you must finish the content of file Eeprom.ini." this means that you have to prepare eeprom.ini file with proper data. BUT you have preprepared eeprom files for several cards ( "eeprom_prodigy71.ini" for exapmle). You have to rename this preprepared eeprom file to "eeprom.ini" which uses eeprwa writer for flashing.
Eeprw tool is for manual flashing. Therefore, it has so many options (9) :-)

No matters which media do you use for booting to pure dos. If you dont have floppy, boot from CD/DVD, flashdisk etc. But you must boot to PURE! DOS. I'm sure, eeprwa tool won't work under linux.

Is it clear now ? ;-) Next post will be that you have successfully flashed your Chaintech to Prodigy, I hope

Just double checking. I burn eeprwa.exe and eeprom_prodigy71.ini to a CD but re name the last one to eeprom.ini? Or do I just burn eeprom.ini and the eeprwa to a cd?

After reading the instructions one more time. I don't think I need to burn anything. It just says to run it

You can just go to commend prompt and run it.
So do I not remane anything? Just type what it says in command prompt? Do I back up my origional one or not bother?

Before you do this, backup your bios.
And, if you would be so kind (since I didn't do this), could you e-mail me the backup? I'm in perminant Prodigy-mode since I don't have the bios anymore...

so much confusion here even when it was explained over and over and is really easy.. first of all this is not BIOS, far from that, that's just a bunch of identification strings and some configuration flags.. we use to call it firmware.. after you download the package, just extract it and make a bootable CD with it.. eeprom.ini already containes prodigy 7.1 firmware, so that the only thing you need to do is to run eeprwa without any parameters and messing around.. thats all! if you need backup firmware, it's lying somewhere around here, just use search..

ok I have updated the archive and added chaintech av710 and esi wt192x firmwares and also wrote a few lines in ReadMe.txt, please re-download it.. I hope it's all clear now..

I think I finally got it. I only burn the eeprwa.exe and the eeprom.ini to a bootable CD. Then I go into command prompt by pressing F8 on windows start up and then how do I run the program? Do I just type
d:
Then I type
eeprwa.exe
?
Or does it boot DOS automatcially?
Also I guess there is no point to back it up because with your new addition, which made it more clear, you can flash it back.

If you have a floppy drive I would make a dos boot disk on a floppy and burn the flashing program along with the firmware on to a cd. Once you boot from you need to point dos to your cd drive. You can do this by typing cd E:\ (or whatever you drive is whether it is D,E,F, etc.). If you don't have a floppy then you can make a boot cd using the process shown here - http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=142799
