today, the right 'phone on my 50s died.
I traced it to a loose connection where the cords converge from the singular plastic widget.

Is there anything I can do?

ps - I can post photos if it helps.

Pull off the flat plastic piece which covers the contacts where the cable is soldered on. (Take care that the pins don't brake!) Desolder the cable, cut the defect piece off, shorten the other conductor accordingly and resolder it. It's easy to do. If necessary, shorten the cable of the second channel equally.

I have the same problem too, few months ago, i noticed that the insides of the wires are showing from the plastic thing...so i just used superglue to stick it back.

also, it will help if you use small strip of tape to bind the the two wires together, that prevents the wires at the wedge from moving. (hope you get what im saying).
