Headphones with emphasis on vocals

I am not sure if you want a more upfront presentation or a more holographic and airy presentation .... like you hear at a mid hall position in a concert hall venue. I like a more natural sound thats not in your face, but not so distant that the perceived distance makes vocal intelligibility an issue. If you like what I describe as my preferance ..... I dont think you can beat the new AKG K701.

I wish I could afford some woodies

. I really want to experience midrange. It just feels as if I am missing a peice of the music.

I enjoy vocals very much on the AKG 271 and 501/601/701's... I feel they have a more forward presentation than the 650's when it comes to vocals.

EDIT: Oh drat. I noticed the thread is about pushed forward vocals. That's easy, all the ATH-W series and L3000. ES7 does a nice job of pushing them forward too. After that is the Grado RS-1, which I also to be very nice and forward with vocals.

Oh well, I'll keep my rankings below anyway.

Best,

-Jason

Hmm. Well out of all the ones I've owned + the RS-1 and R10 which I've borrowed for extended periods, I guess I'd say:

Top best for JJCha's hot female Jpop star vocals:
Grado RS-1
ATH-W11JPN

Extremely darned good
HD600 + Cardas
ATH-W10VTG, ATH-L3000

Very good
HD650 + Zu
Grado PS-1
Sony MDR-R10
ATH-W100, ATH-W10LTD

Good
ATH-W2002 (man, I really don't like these cans, do I?)
Shure E4c
ATH-ES7
Sony MDR-CD3000
Grado HP-2

Okay
Sensaphoncs 2X-S
Shure E5c
Grado SR-225
Qualia 010
Sony SA5000
AKG K 1000

Or something like that...

Best,

-Jason

Depends why you want these cans that emphasize vocals. How much emphasis would you like? A set of Telex comunications/transcription headphones used for radio/dictation would only have a frequency response of about 200-3000 hz and you would mostly hear the voice. You can also get processors that remove vocals or localize the vocals only. None of this would sound very good for enjoyment listening....but if you wanted to pick out lyrics in songs that you couldnt find written lyrics for,it can help.

My Grados are perfect for stuff like Norah Jones. They are so detailed and pleasant to the ear. Mine are SR325i and I highly recommend them. I recommend them over the HD650 because of their much more engaging, upfront sound.

Interesting...You rate the HD600+Cardas over the HD650+Zu. Can you expand on that in terms of vocals performance?

I had the Westone UM2 and sold it specifically for the reason that vocals were de-demphasized and laid back.
