Hey,
I am new to head-fi and need some help with a new headphone purchase. I own the Fa003 and the m50's and the AKG 171 mkii.
I am looking for a headphone which is closed and has a movie theatre like sound signature for up to 200$. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Heya,

Movie theater sound has a lot of emphasis on bass, and sparkly treble. It's all about excitement and exaggeration.

Look into:

Beyer DT770
Ultrasone PRO 900
AudioTechnica A900X
Denon D2000 (used)
Sony XB700 (and equalize up the treble a touch)

Very best,

What source(s) are you plugging the headphone into?

Mostly Yamaha reciever for DVD / Blue Ray watching....

As I'm sure your Yamaha receiver's headphone output is high impedance, I would say to get a headphone in the 250-Ohm to 300-Ohm range.
Which model Yamaha is it?
So it seems the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250-Ohm would be the best choice.

oh really. Now that you mention it the M50s do have a little bit of boom going on in the upper bass area. You think the DT770 would do a better job?

The ATH-M50 is 50-Ohms, so chances are the Yamaha is adding bloated bass (& less detail) to the headphone audio.

So do I stick with the Yamaha for movie/tv sources or do I need to think about a dedicated headphone amp?

If you get headphones in the 250-Ohm to 300-Ohm range, it should work fine plugged straight into the Yamaha.

Unless you plug an external headphone amplifier straight into the Yamaha's headphone jack, the external head amp. will not provide surround sound.
And I'm not sure how well the Yamaha's headphone jack would feed a signal to an external head amp.

Check out reviews of the Beyer DT150, alot of people love it for movies and say it has great soundstage, not too much money either. Only thing is, it's sooooo ugly, got a big 70s look.
