Hey everyone,

I am starting my system and would like some advice about a second headphone. I have an AKG K701 and love em for instrumental, lounge and classical music. I also like rock; classic rock, punk rock and some of the more bass intensive stuff that i believe the 701s would not do very well with. I'm looking at the beyer dt 990s but I dont know if its a good choice for these kinds of music. I am also very very interested in the Schiit Lyr amp (if anyone is selling PM me). Any suggestions on headphones that "rock" and suits the Lyr? Thanks all!

Grado sr325is is good for rock punk, harder the better for this can. It does not have heavy bass but guitars voices and impact is very good, worth considering and differs k701 a lot, it is the opposite of neutral.

Thanks for your reply! Does the 325is need an amp? I've heard that grados dont need amps to sound decent but ive also heard that some people say its flat without amp? Considering to use it as my headphones for my ipod. Is there much difference between the 225, 225i and the 325is?

It does sound much more livlier with amp for sure, and for differences between grado models you will have to drop by to some of many threads here on headfi. One thing for sure Grado sr325is is  so colored headphone it just can not sound flat.

X2
hd600/580 is a big contrast to the k70X....in a good way. Better bass, and better all around, imo. YMMV of course.

Thank you all for your replies. It seems that the hd600 is an upgrade from the k701, not so much a different kind of sound? I'm pretty happy with the k701 sound but i feel the need for different heaphones for the rock stuff. Am i misinterpreting you? Also, i think i changed my mind for the amp. Seriously leaning on the asgard now.
thanks everyone for your input

I listen to a lot of 'classic' rock, and imo, they easily best the 70X for that genre. They sound quite different from the 70X....a warmer, richer midrange, less pronounced treble, better bass, but still very neutral/balanced. But buying anything without first auditioning it is always a gamble.

I made a thread looking for a pair of cans to compliment the K701. Grado 325i and Denons (D2000, D5000, or D7000) was recommended; I went with the Denon D2000 in my budget range, but for you Grado 325i suits you better imo. HD600 and K701 is a little different, but not enough for me to actually call them polar opposites. I would not recommend the pairing of K701 and Asgard. I've heard it and did not like it. Headroom's ultra desktop amp sounded much better when I was at CanJam auditioning the K701.

Granted, im no audiophile, but to me a contrasting headphone to the 70x would have a lot more bass than the 650.

Ok so the HD 650 is a really interesting choice. I will look into it. Navii and Dubstep Girl, it seems that both of you have both the 701s and the 650s, do you think there is a big enough difference to keep both of them? At this stage of my hobby, I imagine that it may be good to keep flipping headphones until I find a sound that I like. Due to budget constraints i'm going to limit myself to 2 maybe 3 headphones at a time.
