Sometimes, I enjoy wearing an open headphone whilst playing the speakers. This approach provides a little cross feed as well as some chest thump. I first tried this in the mid-70's when I got my first open phones, the Koss HV-1. I was impressed with the detail but missed the bass I was used to hearing. Adding the speakers to the mix was a really enjoyable alternative.

I still have the HV-1's but these days, I tend to use Grados with speakers when I want the "speaker/phone" experience.

My dad being the audio maniac. I have access to every imaginable speakers and headphones.
We have the focal grande utopia em in our basement. I think speakers win against headphones ten out of ten times.

After getting back home from a live (unamplified) concert in a hall with good acoustics, I always feel that speakers are able to recreate the music much more life-like than headphones.
