I really like the sound of the HD800 and K701 - especially the tight sound and relative balance. However, on warm summer days, I like listening to a headphone that's a little cooler. Especially during marathon listening sessions.

In terms of comfort and sound, what are my best options?

IEMs or A/C

Pfr-v1 only touches the top of ears like glasses and ducts on ear canal entrance, which may or may not be uncomfortable/painful depending on your tolerance or how well you adjust the headphones. For me it's not uncomfortable unless I am using a heavy cable, and never hurts when I pad the driver balls to rest on my cheekbones. $172-180 shipped on amazon at the moment.

Well closed cans are only going to make things worse, and its harder to be more "open" than AKG or Senn.  GS1000s have the deep well cups that remove the headphone away from the ear, and IEM would bypass the outer ear all together.  Other than that, nothing else is coming to mind.  Besides, on a hot day, headphones would seem claustrophobic methinks.
