Hiya!

So I'm a music student at Berklee and I'm going to be dual majoring in EPD and Film Scoring.

I'm going to be needing a pair of good headphones to be lasting me for the next few years!!

I've been looking around at some headphones, from the ATH-M50S, to others such as the UE 6000, the SRH840, and a few more.

Basically these are the things that matter most:

  1. Needs to be good for use with BOTH orchestral and electronic music (this is probably the most important feature my headphones will need!)
  2. Needs to be sturdy! I travel a lot so they need to be able to handle some pressure.
  3. Amp must be unnecessary
  4. Suitable for both monitoring use and listening pleasure (to some extent)
  5. Price range would be at around $200.

Thanks in advance for the helpful advice! :)

Okay thanks! Another question that others would probably like to hear, does it have to be a closed type, or would you like the enhance soundstage of an openback?

Well, listen to others because I don't have much experience in that price range, but I'd recommend something by Sennheiser. wait for others input too.

Get the HD558. You'll get nothing quite as neutral for less then 350€.
The M50's are a valid choice for noisy environments, lack the ballance of the HD558 and has a harsher treble.

KRK KNS8400 are a good closed back monitoring headphone.

without any kind of soundstage

They're not that bad for soundstage.  At this price point, finding any closed hp with a great soundstage is difficult.  They are very detailed and good for monitoring and making music with.  They are also very sturdy, very comfortable and isolate very well.  I would suggest these KRKs to be definitely on your shortlist.  After much research, I recently chose these over GMP 8.35D, Beyer DT250, Shure SRH840/940 and Soundmagic HP100s for music production duties.  For music listening, I have other cans, but the OP has suggested that listening pleasure is the secondary consideration.

AKG K271 Mk II may also be a closed back consideration, but I haven't heard them.
