Your wallet is really hating you with all the tube rolling, boomy. Even though I'm quite pleased with the long plate mullard I think I'm going to start a nice little tube collection once I have some money after summer since 12AU7s are so cheap and plentiful.

Indeed, that is a great price for Telefunkens. Let us know how you like those in the EF1.

Just an FYI, my new one came in with the RCA cleartop, not the sylvania conn. Not sure if that makes a huge difference, but now others will know, too.

I'm sure Head-Direct is supplying whatever NOS tubes they can most easily get. I know Fang realized that Chinese 12AY7's did not sound very good (he told me so), and thus he buys NOS to supply with the EF1, which is very cool.

Indeed. So far my impressions with the RCA is pretty positive (still burning in, and the vinyl setup, which will be a better quality reference, isn't complete yet), and I plan on trying a mullard long plate with it eventually. I was just posting that as a heads-up for those who are in the market/care because the Sylvania tube is what is listed on the site.

I enjoy it with the Mullard long-plate, and hope to try my new Siemens in the next day or two. The RCA clear top is a little brighter, and not quite as smooth and full sounding as the Mullard, but it certainly is acceptable to me. The Amperex Bugle Boy was too "tubey" to me.

Stupid question.

Is the tube supposed to go all the way down into the socket? How do I know when I'm properly down?

You shouldn't be able to see the pins at all when the tube is inserted properly. So yes, it's supposed to go all the way in.

It... doesn't, though. Even when I put as much pressure as I can onto the tube.

Edit: nevermind, got it. I was afraid I was going to break it!

Glad you got it. It requires a gentle rocking/rolling motion, not just pressure.

What's a fair price for a NOS mullard long plate? I'm not in a hurry, so I can be picky.

I have seen decent condition ones (~80%-110% tested) go for between $24 and the sky. If you can get anything for $20-30 its a good price. I paid $50 for a long plate and a short plate together.
