HD800 vs HE1000/MHP1000 impressions. Suprises all around!
Mar 22, 2015 at 8:20 PM Post #166 of 317
I know a guy who likes the JH Layla more than the HD 800 and K812.

Maybe but I think the JHs are wildly overpriced.

If I makes you feel any better the MHP1000 felt extremely sturdy like a rock, if I remember. If you were to bring it on the road it should be alright if you treat it nicely. Otherwise I recommend shure 846 in ear monitors. Can't really go wrong with shure they make amazing all rounder iems.

All you're saying about those mcintosh HPs is music to my ears :).
And thx for the suggestion but when it comes to IEMs I'm quite set on westone. I like the sound, the comfort is second to none and the service is just wow. Plus, they are still (somewhat) reasonably priced.

I had a chance to listen to my HD800s tonight. I injured my ear at a concert a month and a half ago. Other than the stereo exchange event I haven't been able to listen to headphones because of the pain.
My demo with the MHP1000 was short (and the damn thing reinjured my ear

) but after letting it's characteristics sink in my head for a while and listening to my HD800s again tonight I can see the "shallowness" in my HD800's sound now.
It's as if the sound sticks to the walls in the HD800 and the sound pops out in the MHP1000.
I think the fullness of the MHP1000 may be what I'm after. Or at least that may be part of it. I'm definitely going to have to buy a pair.
I'll probably buy the HE1000 too. As much as they let down my high expectations they are still a really good pair of headphones and they seem like they would be a good contrast to have.

After reading up a bit on the Magnolia stores, it appears to only be on the West Coast https://www.magnoliaav.com/about-us/history

Have you had an appointment with an ENT specialist ?
You have ear damage from a concert .. most likely from higher than healthy SPL's ? And with the damaged hearing you listen to headphones at levels that give you pain again and then you tell everybody about your listening impressions without mentioning your condition in the first place? I guess you just disqualified yourself...

My ear was fine at stereo exchange. It just wasn't completely healed yet. My hearing was perfect and there was no pain as long as it wasn't blaringly loud. The last few minutes I was there with the MHP1000 the gain was too loud when I first put the headphones on and it rattled my inner ear, injuring myself again. It's like your trying to find reasons to disqualify me

Seriously though, that's actually a little childish. I'm not dumb enough to give impressions with damaged hearing.

Sound like hyperacousis to me and it aint fun. Watch out for the signals, your ear is telling you it's tired. Avoid shrill phones like the plegue, avoid phones made to listen to loud to be acceptable, and the most important of all: give your ears some rest and more rest and even more rest.

Hyperacousis can turn into a nasty disease, some people can't stand any more ambiant street noise and stuff, anything beyond moderate level becomes painful.

And, did I say those concerts and discos with dB blasting are the stupidest thing one can indulge oneself when they actually like to make use of their hearing? i guess we've all been through this but it's so sad when people realize too late how dumb it was to go there unprotected.

Yeah it was actually my first concert. I'm not really the concert type, I was dragged into it. Will no doubt be my last one.
I'm not really sensitive to sound except maybe a tiny bit in the high frequencies.
Ever since the concert I've felt like I've had an ear infection in my left ear. For the first few weeks my hearing was busted more or less.
After a month I started hearing crackling sounds in my ear every time I moved and the pain was getting worse. I put a headphone jack in my ear and pressed it against the walls of my ear and fluid came out relieving almost all the pain.
Ever since then it's just been a constant small amount of ear infection-like pain and/or the feeling that I'm listening to sound through a veil, even though my hearing is actually fine except for the fact I can't hear the mosquito tone in my left ear after the convention.
When I have headphones on for more than five minutes I can feel my inner ear vibrating a lot and it both tickles and hurts.
That aspect went away recently as long as I had the volume reasonably low until I messed it up again at stereo exchange.
I left my headphones on for about an hour last night on very low volume, not the best idea since it's hurting me now but it was so nice to actually be able to listen to music

Go to a freakin doctor asap ... like tomorrow the latest....and leave the HPs alone for at least a week.
We can live without your useful updates for a while. But if you dont do anything about that ugly infection you wont be able to enjoy HPs anymore ... ever.

Apparently, your ears weren't fine at Stereo Exchange.

At the very least, you should go back to your first post in this thread and be very specific about how much time you had with each headphone and the hearing damage you currently have from the concert you attended so that people who read it know the full context.

And whatever you do, get your hearing checked by a professional.

I always wear etymotic ear plugs at concerts. They are great because they miraculously let a lot of the music get thru and block out the painful parts. It seems like magic to me.
Avoid the cheap 10-cent kind. They can push wax into your ear if you push them to hard and you will need to see a doctor to flush out your ears.
