HD600: Unreal Price

Jun 1, 2005 at 1:59 AM Post #137 of 214
OK, I'm thinking of getting these suckers for use at work. Canalphones are starting to annoy me - the isolation is making me miss calls, and taking them out and putting them in to talk to people is a hassle I can live without. Portability isn't an issue, the lack of isolation is a plus, and sound leakage isn't a big deal (my own office. Yeah!).

So, the pertinent questions are these:

1). Can a Porta Corda Mk II drive them? I've been using my HD590's with it, out of a Zen micro, and I have to turn up the Micro to 20 out of 25 and the amp about 2/3 of the way up to get the volume loud enough. The Micro has a very weak output signal strength, which is my main concern.
2). What's Amazon's return policy on refurbished items? Yes, this isn't Amazon, but I figured someone might know.
3). Seeing how this won't be my primary setup, do you think the sound quality improvement between the 590 and 600 is worth the given price, given the limitations of the gear that I'll be using them with? These will also be computer headphones (Chaintech AV-710 as source).

Music will be primarily electronica (psytrance and ambient) and classical (solo piano and classical/flamenco guitar).

Gosh... I'm thinking of jumping on the Senn bandwagon. What's wrong with me...

The cans came in the regular hard case with lots of foam and a warranty/manual and everything. It wasn't "sealed", but it was well packaged and definitely passes for brand new in my book. Everything was mint.

Good luck

Deal appears to be dead. Price on reconditioned 600s is back up to $199.

*sigh*

Yeah, it seems that Amazon had a sale on all the Sennheisers, including the refurbs. No longer it seems. Good thing I didn't wait until now to buy the 600s.

it looks like it's linked to the current lowest price out on the internet, a quick froogle search showed up before that when it went up to 190, the amazon page also went up. and doing a quick search now, the lowest i see for refurbed 600s is 200. the 590's are also back up fyi.

Sale's off on the HD-600 probably because they ran out and are sourcing them from Audio Advisor in the meantime. But they dropped the PX-100 to $38 with free ship as a kind of consolation prize.

Speaking of socks, they're very handy for plugging the ports of badly-tuned ported speakers and subwoofers, so always carry a spare pair.

I just picked them up for $189 a few minutes ago, with the amazon card it came out to $159.99 shipped.

try turning off your cookies and searching the site again for the price, I noticed that you search is effected if you have cookies enabled.

jesse_w, you're correct that shaping composites is one of the more difficult manufacturing challenges these days. *BUT* looking at Borat's pic, it seems that they used a carbon weave fabric to make it, so that should solve any of the manufacturing issues.

for those who don't know, a carbon weave fabric is basically strands of carbon fiber weaved togther, so it form a piece of fabric made carbon fibers. the easiest way to think of it is imagine it's just another piece of cloth but instead of having cotton fibers, it has carbon fibers, that's your carbon weave fabric. then it is molded to whatever shape is needed and then cured (typically, carbon fibers are used along with kevlar as the matrix material). carbon fabric weave is actually one of the more commonly used forms of composites since it's so much easier to handle but of course it is not quite as strong as the traditional layup type composites.

from the Borat's picture it sure looks like carbon fiber (i wouldn't call it that, but if you want to use a marketing term that isn't completely wrong, that works!) to me. i don't know what you mean by fake finish. as far as the Qualia stuff you mentioned, i bet those are made from layups, which are generally much stronger and gives better performance (in terms of strength to weight ratio), but they are as you correctly stated much harder to work with. but with carbon weave fabric, that's really a non-issue. in aerospace/aeronautical applications (my field), the strength to weight ratio is quite critical, but for headphones i'm sure using carbon weave fabric is more than good enough.

back to the topic! i'm probably going to get my HD600 from J&R though, since it's $60 more for 3 years more warranty. any recommendations for a good amp to go with it?

Mine shipped within 24 hours, as advertised. They certainly look new to me, but the drivers sound like they are burned in. I'm guessing they've seen a few hundred hours of use at least.

Nice phone. I like it a lot more than I thought I would. Not quite as dark and soft as the HD650. Not better overall, but more to my liking - and a big improvement over the 590 nearly in all respects.

Mine looked new to me too, and thanks to supsup for pointing out the little Braille-like thingies in his mini-review. It's nice to be Sennheisering again.

Yep, Amazon done good.

Would I rather have had a few bucks off to lose the fancy box? You bet.

Mine's not metal, no. It's a largish hinged thick-cardboard box with sculpted foam padding in the bottom half. Very nice, but..
