If only I could get over the marble look..... *sigh*.

Anyway, I like your quote from Collateral... awesome movie and nice soundtrack, too!

And it's not marble, its the look, the feel, of carbon fiber.

Pretty good impact, and pretty good depth. And a whole lot of bass, in terms of pure quantity. The drivers are a long distance away from your ears, so impact isn't as immediate and visceral as it is in a pair of, let's say, grados, but it's definitely good enough.

The bass isn't very clean, though, at least not next to electrostatics. It's fairly resolved, but not all that resolved, and there is some midbass bloat. It's a "heavy" sounding phone, not light and quick like an electrostat. However, it's not necessarily worse for all that. It's quite an enjoyable sound, actually. And the upper regions are all very well resolved.

My favorite dynamic phone thus far. I might consider building a hardcore rig around it.

Hahaha.. nice to know I'm the first.

I know it's carbon fiber, but it doesnt look like regular carbon fiber to me (by regular I mean squared pattern). When you see the the look and feel... what do you mean?

It feels different? I never really felt carbon fiber before? I thought it feels just like plastic.

Catscratch's opinions may get him lynched, but I say he's hit it on the nose. For the amount of money we spent on the refurbs, they're definitely "pretty good" (which is to say "good enough") basswise, though not spectacular, and this is due to a slightly underdamped diaphragm (though by rights we should refer to the whole moving system: diaphragm + voice coil + magnet structure + suspension if any). This is not at all unusual for dynamic 'phones in this price range. Grados are not dissimilar. You could add extra damping material, but there's a tradeoff between stuffing denser damping material behind the driver and retaining the openness of a 'phone with an unfettered backwave (or between using more powerful magnets in an elaborate precision-machined magnet structure and driving the cost out of sight-- take your pick).

Slightly underdamped bass sounds warm and full and fairly pleasant. Draw an analogy to yourself after about three beers-- at that point, you could fairly describe yourself as underdamped. The popularity of this less-than-critical damping is undeniable.

A good test of headphone bass damping is to add a goodly chunk of bass EQ 'way down, around 30-40 Hz. A critically-damped diaphragm will gain in bass detail and start to smack you upside the head when anyone plucks a bass. You'll feel an impact. You may even flinch. Underdamped bass just gets warmer and fuller until it gets positively roly-poly. Falstaff was a popular beer in my St Louis youth, and you could describe boosted underdamped bass as.. wait for it.. Falstaffian. Apologies to Shakespeare. Rotund.

I suspect that with the 650 Sennheiser tinkered with the damping of the driver.

I was using an analogy to the commercial slogan..."The look, the feel, of cotton".

The only difference, according to Sennheiser between the 580's and the 600's, is some of the materials used. The drivers are the same, But plastic is used (cheaper) in the 580's, so the vibration is not absorbed as well. This was discussed earlier in the thread, as well as people not agreeing to the headband, and the cups, actually being carbon fiber.

Here is the Headroom link describing the differences:

http://www.headphone.com/products/he...ser-hd-600.php

...and I quote Headroom: "Following in the same design as the HD580 the HD600 has the same comfortable velour ear cups and headband pad but now incorporates carbon fiber headband and bails with metal mesh grilles. The result is less spurious mechanical vibration in the headphone giving a clearer and more articulate sound."

I ordered mine on Thursday and I got an e-mail today saying that they're being shipped. I'm having them sent to my dad for Father's Day so I'll be sure to ask him what he thinks of them being refurbs.

Interesting how a thread can wrap itself around in a knot isn't it.

It's tough to read a 176 threads, but unfortunately, it's a must do, if you want to join in on a thread later on.
The same thing happened with the carbon fiber questions. No big deal.

At this point in the thread I wanna thank original poster and fellow traveler JB for pointing us the way to the glorious peoples' Sennheiser Refurb Spring of '05. Hip hip, huzzah!
